Traveling to Iceland's Interior

I've been fascinated by photos posted all over the internet on Iceland's relatively unvisited Interior. It looks like another planet. I'm wondering if there are PHOTO tours of the interior? Until recently, it looked like you had to have your own 4x4 to go there, but it seems to be catching on.

Also, when is the season to visit the interior? I believe you can visit the rest of the island anytime, but the interior is only clear of snow during the summer. If it's like Alaska and Canada, I want to avoid mosquito season, which is earlier in the season in Alaska.
Thanks.

There are no mosquitos in Iceland so don't worry about that. Midges around Myvatn but that's about it. For the interior, yes you need to think summer, as in July/August;). As for a photography tour of this area, I have no idea. I would google that and then whatever you come up with check out the company fully before booking. Make sure you are booking directly and not through a 3rd party such a Viator, etc.

I was told that rental cars cannot be taken off road into the interior. The off roading in Iceland isn't the same as in the US. If the car gets dinged with a stone (which is highly likely if you're off roading), you'll be liable.

I don't know how off roading is in the US, but in Iceland it's illegal.

We circled the country in a week and, while we say lots of cool waterfalls, two spas and one volcano, I thought a lot of the landscape was long, barren and repetitive. If the interior is anything like the outer ring I’m not sure how much there is to see, or snap.

The interior is a challenge all its own. Most of the roads are designated as "F" roads, and can only be driven in the summer and by someone with high clearance 4 wheel drive. Some of the roads cross rivers and require experienced drivers. Or you can take a super jeep tour.
