Is it possible to tour Iceland and see the the Northern Lights by yourself, or is a tour recommended.
The tour drivers know where to go to find the best viewing spots, which can vary depending on the clouds. AND, if you don't see the lights the first time out they will take you again.
Honestly, driving in Iceland in the winter can be extremely hazardous. Please go to the Travel Iceland Facebook page and read the announcement at the top of the page about winter driving. No matter how much experience you have driving in snow and ice, it's the wind that can blow you off the road!
We have seen them on our own, but as mentioned the guides all talk to each other and know where to go. On this trip we are taking a tour, just because;)
It is certainly possible, but if the goal is to see the northern lights, Iceland is not the best destination.
We just got back from Iceland again last night. One night, right in Reykjavik, we had the most amazing aurora show! You could see the greens vividly with the naked eye!
Another night we did a NL tour and the guide we went with does NOT go where other groups go. He has a few small guides that he talks with, but none of them go near each other, or at least close enough to even see the other vehicle/people. It was a great evening even though the lights were not as intense as the prior evening. Our guide was fantastic and I would absolutely go with him again! Aurora Experts is the name, and Heimer is a one man show and knows his stuff!
