To do in Reykjavik

Can you suggest something to see or do that is a must? I'm already planning to visit Hallgrimskirkja Church and going whale watching. I read that it's suggested to visit Old Reykjavik but I'm not sure what's there. I'm only in Reykjavik for 2 days before heading out to the Golden Circle. Thanks for your help!

I would start your first full day (or afternoon of your arrival day) with a guided walking tour, which would "cover" the area in the vicinity of the harbor. It's been long enough that I can't remember the tour's name (maybe "By Locals"?), but the guide was a political science and history grad student with such interesting (and often very funny) insights.
I thought the Saga Museum was fascinating.
Have a wonderful trip!

Reykjavik has a lot to offer.

We have done the Citywalk "free" walking tour several times. You tip at the end, what you want. You can book a week in advance and it sells out, so if it interests you, mark it on your calendar. You cannot just show up to it. It is a great introduction to the city/country, IMO.

Also the food tour is excellent and a great way to try the local foods. We have done it twice and both times there was more than enough food for both lunch and dinner.

I really like to wander the Handknitting Association store that is just down from the church.

Check out Harpa, inside and out. Walk to the Sun Voyager. Check out the street art and murals, making sure you get off the main drag to see more.

Many people like Flyover Iceland. I was not a fan, but am in the minority.

Visit a local pool. The rooftop hot tubs at Sundhollin are wonderful!

The National Museum is excellent. It is fairly small and easily digestible and will give you a good overview of the history and culture of Iceland.

If I only have time to do one, would you recommend the National Museum or the Perlan Museum? And how are they different?

I second the recommendation for a food tour. I did one with Your Friend in Reykjavik and it was a combo of food and history tour. You won't need dinner if you take an afternoon tour. I also did the "free" walking tour of the historic center which covered similar area (without food) and was just as interesting. I enjoyed the Settlement Museum (next to my hotel) for a cool look at an archaeological excavation.

We recently followed the RS walking tour in Reykjavik, then set out for the Golden Circle afterwards. Not sure when you will be there - in May we of course had no issue getting back while still light.

The RS walking tour was good enough for us.

Sorry but I have not been to the Perlan so I have no way to compare it to the National Museum.

The Perlan Museum focuses on the geological aspects and features of Iceland. You'll learn alot about the interface of the tectonic plates, as well as glaciers, volcanos, geysers and the Icelandic landscape. You'll also learn about animals native to Iceland. I found it very interesting and informative. There's a nice cafe at the top with beautiful 360° views. I've not been to the National Museum, so can't compare the two.
