Þorrablót buffets in early/mid-January?

I just found out that I'm going to be in Reykjavik in the middle of January, specifically January 13-16. I understand that the festival of Þorrablót starts on the first Friday after January 19. My question: Do restaurants start offering the usual Þorrablót buffets and food selections only after Þorrablót actually starts, or can the food be found in the days before? I'm a very adventurous eater, and I've always wanted to try all the unique foods served in Iceland during the Þorrablót festival.

Thanks!

I tried the hákarl (fermented Greenland shark) on a food tour and while not horrible, it's not something I would return for on purpose. You might email one of the local companies that does food tours to see if they have any advice. I used Your Friend in Reykjavik for my food tour, and they do offer a private tour option. Good luck to you, and maybe pack some pepto just in case :)
