Tentative Itinerary for Ring Road in August, night stay suggestions?

Hello!

We (two couples) are tentatively planning a trip to Iceland August 9-17 2021. We are all fully vaccinated. It would be my second trip, the others first time. Based on my previous experience, I would like to do the ring road and think we can do it comfortably.

That said, my previous trip I did the Snaefellness Peninsula through Höfn. So doing the ring road, I’m not sure where good stops would be to stay the night. I have a tentative outline below. That being said, I don’t really prefer to stay the last night in Reykjavik, but not sure where to add the extra night. Suggestions would be welcome. Some of us aren’t in very great shape, so long/steep hikes are out of the question. 1/2 hr or less things to see are preferable. Thank you!

Itinerary

9th: Arrive 6am. Get car. Stay night in Reykjavik

10th: Stay at Kirkjubaejarklaustur

11th: Stay in Höfn

12th: Stay in Egilsstadir (ish)?

13th: Stay in Myvatn

14th: Stay in Hvammstangi.

15th: Stay on Snaefellness Peninsula .

16th: Stay in Reykjavik

17th: Flight leaves 6:30pm

What is a good plan for one person can be horrible for the next. So what are you looking for? That being said, it looks pretty good to me, not too rushed which is very important on Iceland. You seem a bit unsure about Egilsstaðir, why?

If you want to spend the last night in a smaller town, maybe Grindavík is an option? Also, don't rent a car at the airport when you arrive. Rent it day 2 when you actually leave Reykjavík.

I’m unsure because I’m not quite sure what there is to see between Höfn and Myvatn, if it’s just beautiful scenery to be seen while driving, without many areas to explore, they maybe go through all the way to Myvatn, and stay there two nights?

We like to get out on little walks, like on the beach or up at the lighthouse at Dyrholaey, around Kerid Crater, small things like that.

Thank you for your response!

Little walks in what kind of areas? Southeast of Egilsstaðir there are some fjords worth visiting if you are passing by.

Honestly Badger any kind of area, we want to experience the variety and beauty that is Iceland! Do you know of anywhere to see puffins?

I know of a great place to see puffins, but it is in Scotland. However, from what I've heard Vestmannaeyjar is a good spot for puffins in Iceland.

And if any area will do, I think you should spend a bit of time in the fjords mentioned, so a night in Egilsstaðir sounds like a great idea to me. But that is just my opinion and others might have other opinions.

I'm glad I can help. Another piece of advice: Follow the traffic rules or it can be expensive. Traffic fines can be high in Iceland, thousands of euros is not unheard of.

HI
we are actually doing something similar in reverse in June, fingers crossed! This will be my 5th time and 1st for friends.
Instead of Reykjavik how about Selfoss at the end? You can then go the next day and do the peninsula by the airport. Just a thought

Hello, I think your plan looks pretty good overall. We had 2 weeks to do the Ring Road so went at a much slower pace and had a night in Egilsstadir and then down the road in Seydisfjordur. Seydisfjordur was our favorite overnight stop and town of the whole 2 weeks. The scenery on the drive down from Egilsstadir was stunning and S. had unbelievable views, waterfalls, and a cute little harbor area and town to walk around (with a great restaurant/brewery by the way). We had overnights everywhere you are planning except Hvammstangi although we did stop there for lunch during a really bad rain storm so we didn't see much there at all. I think the Myvatn nature baths are very, very, very much worth it and we had an amazing evening there as the sun went down.
