Suggestions: What's Missing from My Two Week Itinerary?

I'm going to Iceland primarily for scenic natural beauty and surreal landscapes. I want to do the ring tour, and doing things at a reasonable pace, I've come up with this so I can reserve lodging ahead of time. I still have a couple of days left. Is there a place I should stay longer? Are there things worth doing twice in a row? Is there a major (and non overnight) hike I'm missing? If it were a tropical location I'd bring a book and read on the beach. What's the Iceland equivalent?

Add an extra day in Lake Myvatn. Plenty of unique hikes there. Your itinerary sounds great although optimistic. Driving is often slow because of road conditions and because you want to pull over frequently to take spectacular photos. And factor in the frequent rain anytime of year.

You have too many activities crammed into days 11 and 12.

Thanks! I'm not sure how to account for the weather and also book lodging before the good deals disappear. Obviously, if, say the Landmannalaugar day winds up being crappy, I'd want to stay another day hoping for better weather. Other than picking places that allow last minute cancellations, what do you recommend doing?

As for days 11-15, here is what I'm thinking now

  1. Myvatn
  2. Myvatn
  3. Drive the Trollaskagi Peninsula, stopping in Siglufjordur; Glaumbaer Museum; Dynjandi
  4. Grabrok Crater, SNAEFELLSNES PENINSULA ROADTRIP, other West Coast sites
  5. Departure mid afternoon

Your revised itinerary looks better. I cannot counsel you on accommodations on the fly as we had all hotels prebooked. Weather in Iceland is hard to predict. We were fortunate to have had mostly sunny days with a day and a half of rain. You may or may not be so lucky. Do not predicate your plans on having good weather. Have an alternative plan for possible rainy days.
