We're considering staying at the Volcano Huts by Thorsmork for 2 nights in late May and realize we will need to take the bus to get up there. It looks like we can catch the bus in Hvolsvollur or Bru Basecamp or Skogar. Are there places at those stops to leave our rental car? Any other advice about hiking or other activities in that area? Thanks!
We stayed at the Volcano Huts on one of our trips. We took the SouthCoast Adventure bus in from Bru Base and left our rental car there. There is nothing there, just the small parking lot. Do stand by the road so the bus knows you are there for them, otherwise they will drive on by. You can leave your car at any of the 3 places though. We loved hiking at Thorsmark and the great thing about the trails there is you can vary your route within the different trails, so can go as short or as long as you want. The front desk at the Volcano Huts has trekking poles you can borrow. They are limited, so if you need them, try to get off the bus first so you are one of the first to check in and snag the poles. They were very helpful on a few of the descents. The showers there were really nice! Large, nice decking and huge rain shower heads. Plus plenty of room to keep your dry clothes dry and out of the wet area. The lodge has good food. We did not do the buffet dinner, but opted for the burgers in the late afternoon. If you let them know ahead of time, you can preorder hiking lunches to go. They give you a ton of food in those!
We did this after we had spent the prior 10 days in the Westfjords, and were not disappointed at all.
I really appreciate your helpful information. Did stay in the glamping tents or in the cabins?
I was trying to find a site to book direct but haven't been able to. Did you use a third party like booking.com?
Thanks!
We stayed in the cabins. They are pretty bare bones but were perfect for us. They have linens you can rent, but we had our sleeping bags/pillows as we had a camper van for the time in the Westfjords. The bedroom area was 2 sets of bunk beds and a small table. The front of the cabin had another small table/chairs and a bit of a kitchenette. No coffeepot or kettle, but one burner and a pot, so you can make cowboy coffee if you need some before the lodge opens in the morning. No refrigerator. Very basic, but worked well for us. We booked direct at www.volcanotrails.com
We are considering either the cabins or the glamping tents. Thanks so much for the link to their site!
