Staying along the Golden Circle

I will be traveling with my mother to celebrate her 75th birthday in September. Before heading to Norway, we are spending several days in Iceland. We are renting a car and have reservations in Vik for two days, and are then going from Vik back to Reykjavik counter-clockwise around the Golden Circle. We are considering breaking that drive up and are looking for suggestions for somewhere to stay along the Golden Circle ... possibly on the Reykjavik side, but we're flexible. If not, we can go all the way, but wanted to have the flexibility and time.

There are lodging opportunities near Geysir which is close to Gullfoss - two interesting sites. I stayed at a little spot just down the road from Geysir, but I can't recommend it.
Every conversation regarding Iceland mentions expense - and costs are elevated in resort areas.

Blue439, would you mind sharing where you stayed and your experience so that I might knock it off my list? Or at least look at it twice? I appreciate the first-hand experience/feedback. Really appreciate it.
