Snaefellsness itinerary help

hello, traveling the end of sept with 5 adults, decent physical shape, medium hikers. spending 6 nights: 1 Reykavik, 2 Skaftafell, 1 night Laugarvatn, 1 night Stykkisholmur and 1 night????

my current question is about where to stay the last night. As I'm planning the trip from Stykkisholmur around the Snaefellsnes peninsula, I am running into too much to see and not enough time. The Shark museum doesn't open until 10am so we wont be able to get up early and start sightseeing right away. I originally was going to stay in the Borgarnes area so only 2hrs from airport, but now I'm thinking of staying at Hotel Rjukandi which is 3hr drive to airport.

these are the thoughts running through my head:
want to see: Kirkjufellsfoss, Djupalonssandur Beach, Basalt formations/sea arch at Arnarstapi
not sure about Shark museum and Saxholl Crater
Is 3 hrs from the airport on Oct 1 a bad idea because of possible bad weather. Flight leaves at 4:55pm?
Is the Shark museum as great as RS suggests?
also, having a hard time finding accomadations around Borgarnes.

No-one can tell you what the weather will be like on October 1, but for peace of mind I would not try to plan to drive three hours to the airport on departure day. Too many things can go wrong.

We were there in mid-September one year and had great weather; two weeks later the roads were closed. Other years you could have good weather until November.

My two cents: I also wouldn't be three hours away from the airport on departure day, far too many things could go wrong. At first blush it appears you will be doing an immense amount of driving for such a short visit and back tracking based on your listed order of cities. You simply can't see it all, so I would suggest cutting one of the outlier areas, otherwise you won't have time to actually stop and see things. I'd also suggest swapping your day 1 and staying in Reykjavik on the last night instead. Then you would be 45 minutes from the airport (and remember, you need to allow time to return rental car, get checked in, through security, etc. so don't cut too close).
