I would like to tweek our 18 day self drive itinerary to gain a second night in Seyoisfjorour. We'll leave Skaftafell, stop at both Laggons and Diamond beach, and then (plan a) head to Djupivogur for the night or (plan b) push on to Seyoisfjorour. How long is reasonable to spend at the Lagoons and Beach? I like photography so don't want to rush it. Maybe we even do a zodiac ride. Rather than get to Djupivogur with hours to spare, does it make any sense to shoot for Seyoisfjorour to enjoy an extra day there?
I assume that you mean Seydisfjordur. From Skaftafell it's at least five hours just driving, no stops.
If you like photography, then I suggest spending at least a half hour at Diamond Beach and also take a zodiac boat tour on the lagoon right across the highway. We did the zodiac and they take you very close to the floating icebergs and you can get safely close to the face of the glacier. That adds another hour and a half.
There is such gorgeous scenery along that route, that you'll want to stop and pull over to get pictures. I would suggest stopping somewhere along the way to spend the night and not try to push on through. Maybe further than Djupivogur to give you more time in Seydisfjordur the next day.
I agree. Last summer we did the zodiac boat tour as well and really lucked out as the guide noticed the glacier calving, so he raced us over to it and we got to watch the entire thing unfold. Amazing, and something you would not get to see if you were not able to get close.
