Side trip to Greenland?

We're going to Iceland this summer and thinking about a side trip to Greenland of say, 2-5 days. I'm looking for suggestions about itineraries and providers.

Thanks, Bob

Hi Bob,

Hope you accept this reply unrelated to your query. I just wanted to chime in because I also will travel to the Arctic Islands.

I will stay 1 day in Iceland upon arrival before traveling to Greenland for an 8 day dogsledding tour through Greenland Adventures. Before returning home to California, I booked a day tour with Icelandic Mountain Guides. If anyone has tips for this trip pertaining to transportation and money exchange or other, I’d appreciate it. Thanks Bob.

Have fun! Chris

I was looking into this as well.

Air Iceland Connect ( not Icelandair) offers flights from Reykjavik to Greenland. The flight from Reykjavik to Nuuk takes 3 hours and 20 minutes and is on a turboprop.

Disko Bay at Ilulissat is the most beautiful polar area (other than Antarctica) that I have ever seen. It is on the west side of Greenland. Going out by (captained) boat among the icebergs is incredible and we spotted many whale; then also hiking by land to see the large icefield is memorable, too.

We flew into Kangerlussuaq (airport) on an Icelandair charter, but I would guess they (might) provide non-charter service, too. The airport is very small (for obvious reasons). Flying over Greenland is truly interesting (at a lower altitude than what most international jets have when flying over en route to Europe).

Arrange a local guide to learn a bit about the lifestyle and culture, which are fascinating. Asking a young person about dating reveals lots of challenges. Google and you will be shocked at just how few miles of paved roads there are in Greenland.

If you can swing a trip to Greenland "while in the neighborhood" (giggle, giggle), I encourage you to do it. I would suggest closer to 5 days, rather than just 2 days.

Many people go to East Greenland, but I have no personal experience there, so cannot advise. We traveled with National Geographic.
