Any advice about whether to drive from KEF to Hella via Routes 41 and 1; or route 427 via Grindavik? I’ve done the Route 1 drive before, in winter. Is the route 427 scenic enough to be worth it? Also expect some jet lag, This will be the start of a ring road self drive.

We went 427 on our ring road trip last summer and really enjoyed it. We also took part of it on our most recent winter trip. I would definitely do that again, FWIW.
Getting in a car and driving right after you arrive after a long flight is not ideal, especially if you expect som some jet lag. And doing it in the winter in Iceland is really not a great idea.
I agree about not driving far upon arrival. We don't know what time of year this is though as it was mentioned their last time driving was in winter, but no mention of when this trip is.
