Route 427 south coast to lava tunnels (raufsrholshellir) en route to golden circle?

Staying in vogar, south of Reykjavik. Thinking of taking an alternate route to golden circle. Driving in 427 to thorlakshofn, then visit lava tunnels before heading north to see the usual sites.

Any experience on that coastal drive? Is it scenic? Is it a tough drive? We will have 4 x 4, timing is early October.

We have all day, didn’t want to back track so looking for options

We have taken that route twice, once in October and once in February. 427 is very pretty in the winter. It is an easy drive as long as the weather is good, but that is the same for all of Iceland. Be sure to keep an eye on the road and weather conditions multiple times each day, not just once before heading out. It changes drastically and very quickly!
