I've read so many great things about the free city tour and the Friends Food Tour. Do they overlap in terms of content? Is it overkill to do both?
TIA!
We have done both, several times each. They do not overlap for content and they are both a lot of fun! The food tour that we have done is this. https://www.thereykjavikfoodwalk.com It is the same as Wakeupreykjavik, they just market under both names.
I assume you mean one of Your Friend in Reykjavik's food tours? https://yourfriendinreykjavik.com/food-and-drink-experiences/
I did their food tour (day 1) and a free city tour (day 3). There was some overlap in content but one has 100% more food :) All kidding aside, I wished I had done the free tour the first day I was there, it is a good overview of history of the city and country. The food tour is really food focused with a side of history. I didn't think it was overkill and frankly repetition was helpful to get things to sink in.
Thanks for the advice! We’ve decided to do the City Walk on the first day and the Food Tour for lunch on the 2nd. The City Walk is “free” but you tip at the end. I hate to bring this up, as it’s been discussed so many times, but for this situation, what is an appropriate amount? We just want to do the right thing.
TIA!

You can tip what you want, but I have read it is common to tip the equivalent of $10-20 USD per person, depending on the length of the tour and how much you enjoyed the guide. Tip in Icelandic krona, not euros or dollars.
For the Citywalk tour, we usually tip around $15 pp. They take cards though, so you don't need any cash for that.
BTW the two food tour links above are the same company. They just use two different platforms for marketing.
All good to know! I feel well prepared! Thanks everyone!
Thanks for all the detailed info — super helpful! It’s great to know the food and walking tours offer different experiences without too much overlap. I love the idea of doing the City Walk one day and the Food Tour the next. Also really appreciate the tipping guidelines — always good to be culturally respectful. Can’t wait for the trip now!
Tipping for the walking tour is the only way they get paid. For the rest of Iceland, it is not a tipping culture so no need. Several locals I have talked to about this on various trips have mentioned they would like the tipping culture to remain in the US, and not be brought over, minus this tour due to the way it is arranged.
I know the tipping culture has been discussed ad nauseam, but I did want to add that I emailed our two tour companies--very well regarded and recommended on Rick Steves, and both responded that "although not required, the guides always appreciate the acknowledgment and we should do what we're comfortable with." There never seems to be a clear answer! We will not tip as we do at home but will probably be prepared with a modest amount of ISK. Since we're doing most of the trip on our own, I may just tip myself and buy a nice dinner! LOL!
Thanks again for all the wonderful input. This forum it wonderful!
Of course a tour company would want tips, but I personally refrain from it after chats with the locals. I tend to ask on most of our trips, just to see if things are shifting, and so far I get consistent answers, FWIW.
