We are considering doing a Viking Cruise to Iceland and Norway. We thought we would arrive 2 -3 days early and spend time around Reykjavik. We are wondering where we should stay and what we should try to see in that area of Iceland. Thank you!
Are they including anything in Reykjavik or the surrounding area?
My trip report might give you some ideas:

We did some day tours with Arctic Adventures (https://adventures.is/) when we were in Reykjavik. They were great and I would use them again.
You have a number of options. You could stay in Reykjavik the night of arrival then get a rental car and venture out in the morning. Or take tours. I would not go to the same places the cruise will stop though. A tour company that is local and that we have used on a handful of our trips there is Troll. They are excellent! One time our 2nd day of a tour had to be cancelled due to weather and they were so good with communication etc and they processed the refund immediately. I would absolutely use them again FWIW.
Do the Golden Circle tour. I’d stay somewhere within easy walking distance of the big church. I have 3 times booked apartments thru booking.com
We liked the Alda hotel in Reykjavik. Take at least 1/2 a day to walk around Reykjavik. The Sky Lagoon was amazing, you need 3-4 hours total. I also recommend a tour of the Golden Circle.
Nice Travel also has some excellent options, and they’re great to work with. Keep in mind you may be permitted only a small carry-on with a tour and would need to store your bags. We are doing the Bergen- Faroe Is-Iceland cruise now, spending a night in Reykjavik at the end, then doing a 3 day tour with Nice, then back to the same hotel for a night before picking up our rental car for another 5 days. The hotel is kindly storing our regular luggage for us. If you can manage, try to do 3-4 days before embarking, as there is so much to experience!
