Hello! I wondered if you might have recommendations for affordable restaurants in Reykjavik for a family of 5. Thank you for any ideas!
There are loads of great restaurants in town. You say kids, but what ages, are they picky, etc. I could rattle off a bunch that we like, but it would be more helpful to you if we had a bit more information:)
Not really a restaurant, but a trip to Reykjavik wouldn't be complete without a stop at the world famous Icelandic Hot Dog stand.
Sure, it's junk food, but they are delicious.
The original stand is in the center of town but you can find them all over. They even have a stand at the airport.
The kids might like it.
The hotdog stand idea is a wonderful idea. Thank you!
Mikliz97, The kids are 1513 and 10. They are still fine eating smaller portions from kids meal menus. I guess our main priority is “affordable” if possible. we are only in Iceland for a quick 24 hour stop over.
Another place you could look into is Icelandic Street Foods. It serves traditional Icelandic Foods but somewhat affordable. The menu varies.
You would know if your kids are adventurous to try new things made mostly of lamb or seafood.
If not, you will find plenty of places as you walk around. Their menus will be posted.
Don't look for McDonalds or Burger King. You won't find any. But there are plenty of KFC and Subway.
Hot dogs are the only affordable food in Iceland !
That helps, thank you. There are ways to eat affordably in Iceland. Hot dogs are one way, and they are good (I won't eat the US ones).
Here are some other ideas. Go the Bonus etc and buy picnic items and make sandwiches etc. Go to a food hall such as Hlemmur Matholl or Grandi Matholl. You can grab a slice of pizza, have a Bahn mi, etc. This is especially nice with a family since everyone may want something different. The Sea Baron is right down on the wharf and they have fish and veggie kebobs as well as lobster soup. The soup and bread run about $15. Veggie kebobs are about $5+ and the fish kebobs are about $15+. I would either do the soup or the kebobs, but not both as that is too much food for me.
Another way to save money is to have your big meal at lunch as the lunch menu's are cheaper than dinner.
Also, look at places with small plates or where meals are more family style. For small plates, we like Forretta Barinn. They have a lot of small plates as well as a kids menu. There is also Tapas Barinn. The food was good, but I was not a fan of jam packed it was ,etc so we have only been that one time. For more family style, look at Messinn as their dishes are in big pans and you can easily share one pan for 2-3 people. My husband and I always share and still cannot eat it all. The pans run roughly $30-$35. The plokkfiskur and the arctic char ones are our favorites. So even two pans for 5 people would be roughly $60 which is quite affordable, IMO. They also have skewers, soup, etc.
Hi mikliz97! Your advice was so helpful, thank you! We at lunch at one of the food halls you mentioned. It was fantastic- plenty of choices for everyone and a few of us shared pizza, too. We also tried the famous hot dogs- so good! Thanks again, we had a quick 24 hours in Iceland and you definitely steered us in the right direction, food wise
sarahsevilla3--I am so glad I could help:) I hope you are able to make a return trip:)
