Renting Car without A/c: Means no heating as well ?

Hi -

We will be in Iceland for 5 days :: Aug 06 - Aug 11. I was looking at car rentals available at the Keflavik airport. I am confused about 1 thing:-

Many of these rentals list on the Hertz site as " No Air". I guess, we may not need air conditioning in early August. But wanted to understand if this means "No heating" as well ? I mean, temperatures may suddenly drop & we might need to switch on the heating. If that is not available, then that might be an issue ?

Anyone has any thoughts / experience on this ?

Why don't you e-mail them to confirm. I've never rented a car in Iceland however air conditioning is separate to heating. I've looked at the website and see no reference to "No Air", I assume it to mean no air conditioning. Vehicles are adapted to their location, I recall my first ride in a taxi in Thailand and his heating control went from cold to cold, everything about the car was the same as it would be in the UK except he would have no requirement for heating.

However, I cannot give you absolute assurance so for that you will need to confirm with Hertz direct.

Two completely separate systems. You will have a heat. And freon has been banned for a couple of decades.

The car will absolutely have heating in Iceland.

Yes - Heating will be there. I contacted Hertz & this is their response:-

Some cars my not have AC but all the cars can blow cold air. Similar to the picture below the cars can blow both hot and cold air.
AC is not required in the summer in Iceland unfortunately it does not get very hot here.

Air conditioning has a compressor unit and freon that cools the car. Like in your house. Air conditioning was a special order in most cars years ago. You will have heat like it or not.

"In 2003, the phase out of R22 (commonly called Freon) production and imports began. By early 2010 the production and import of R22 became prohibited. The production and import of R22 will be continually reduced by law until 2020, when all production and import will be eliminated. Only recycled R22 refrigerant will be available to service existing air conditioners after Jan 1, 2020."

That fits my definition of being banned.
