recommendations for travel in mid April

My husband is skiing in the Fossavatnsganaen ski race on Saturday, April 18th. We are staying in Isafjordur friday and Saturday nights.

Wondering a suggestion on ittinary before and after the race? We arrive early Tuesday morning, 4/14 and fly out 4/21.

Better to go the South Coast areas, and perhaps Westman Islands? Or do we drive up towards Isafjordur after some time in Reykjavik? Concerned about temps/snow/wind heading north.

AND, is a 4 wheel drive vehicle recommended?

Thank you

April is still solidly winter in the Westfjords. I would not do this without a 4WD/AWD. In fact, we get an 4WD/AWD on every trip that we have rented cars thee because you just never know what roads you may end up being interested in going.

Are you flying up to Isafjordur? I would suggest that. I would fly up at least a day before the race because flights are often cancelled to/from there and you don't want him to miss it.

I would take the extra time at the beginning and se Reykjavik and possibly a day excursion, depending on what/how you plan to get to Isafjordur. Then after the race I would do either Snaefellsness or the south coast. You are too early for Westmann Islands to be at their best. The puffins won't arrive for a bit more, and that is the big draw there.
