Need recommendations for seeing puffins in Reykjavik

Yes, you will need to take a tour as puffins are not right in Reykjavik itself.

They are the cutest little things though! If you don't want to do a tour, you can rent a car and go to Westmann Islands for a day.

They are indeed adorable. When are you going to Iceland? I ask because we learned that they come ashore during the breeding season of late April to August and much easier to see rather than during the winter months when they spend the majority of their time far out to sea. With that said, even during the breeding season you will need to be in a boat out to sea. We saw them in Ireland in late April, and it was amazing (thousands of them flying and diving in the waters and roosting in the island rocks). Sorry I do not have a tour recommendation for you, but definitely try hard to make it happen.

Maryam--The puffins are often on land, but not in the Reykjavik area. If you go to Snaefellsness, Westfjords, East fjords, Westmann Island, etc the puffins are right there on land and you get to see them up close. Reykjavik itself though, yes you need to take a boat tour.
