Planning a 10‑Day Iceland Trip in Late June/Early July - A Few Questions.

Hi everyone.

We’re planning a 10‑day trip to Iceland in late June/early July, and we are leaning toward renting a camper van so we can stay flexible in case the weather shifts. Our main plan is to drive the Ring Road with a few detours if time and conditions allow. I would love some advice from folks who’ve done a similar trip. Here are my questions:

Weather reliability in late June:
I know Icelandic weather is unpredictable, but based on past patterns, how stable is the weather around late June? Is it usually somewhat sunny/clear, or is it all over the place? We’re trying to decide between renting a regular car + hotels vs. a camper van for more flexibility.

4x4 for F‑roads:
Since we’re going right around the time when some F‑roads might open (mid‑June to mid‑July), is it worth paying extra for a 4x4 camper? Or is it better to skip the F‑roads entirely since openings are unpredictable?

Camper van restrictions:
Are there any limitations on where camper vans are allowed to go? Anything we should be aware of in terms of road types or areas?

Campground availability:
How busy do campgrounds get in late June? Can we book overnight spots last minute once we know our daily plan, or do they typically require booking far ahead? If everything needs to be pre‑booked, that kind of takes away the flexibility advantage—so I’m curious how it compares to booking hotels.

General tips:
Any recommendations, must‑dos, or things you wish you knew before doing a Ring Road camper trip?

Thanks so much! Any insights are super appreciated.

I replied to your same post on the other forum you posted to, so I will be more brief here:)

Campers are a great way to go for flexibility. We like Happy Campers and do like having the 4WD. It gives a bit more clearance, so even if you don't do F roads (which ours was allowed) it is still good for many times when you leave route 1.

Almost all campgrounds do not take reservations. Just show up. If it is late, the host will find you in the morning to pay. Some you pay via a parking app and if so there will be signs.

A 10 day ring road trip is doable, but you will still miss a lot, just so you know. You won't be doing many detours to keep it at 10 days, but you can include Snaefellsness, which I highly recommend.

Read my Camper Van Tips sticky at TA and that should answer a lot of your questions:)
