planning 8 day trip for June 2025

We are a couple from the U.S. 68 and 75 years old. In decent shape to do moderate hikes/walking. We plan to rent a car. We are tentatively thinking of doing Reykjavik and the southeastern part of Iceland this coming June 2025. We are thinking of the following itinerary: 2 nights in Reykjavik; 2 nights on the south coast; and 2 nights in the southeast and then 1 night back in Reykjavik. We are open and flexible about adding additional nights. We are limiting our time to this section because we don't want to spend too much time driving. Our questions are:

  1. Is this a good distribution of nights?
  2. Looking for suggestions of easy to moderate hikes and things to do to maximize this itinerary

Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

That would work, but I would only do one night in Reykjavik and add that extra night along the coast. If you have a morning flight, then yes staying in Reykjavik would be good, but if you have an afternoon flight I would stay say around the Golden Circle or Westmann Islands so you would be able to see more.

Just so you are aware, this is very late for planning. Most people book out 9-12 months in advance, so your itinerary may be dictated by what you find available for lodging.

As for hikes, Hengifoss is a great one, and you can hike at Gjain which is far less crowded than many places since it is off the main road, Bruarfoss in the GC is great but don't just park at the car park and go see it, do the actual hike. You can hike Reykjadalur which is a hot river. So hike up, soak, and hike back down.

If you are up for a bit more challenging, do a day trip to Thorsmark and hike there. Absolutely fabulous hiking and amazing views! You can't drive there though, you would need to reserve the bus as there are numerous water crossings. We used Southcoast Adventures for the bus, and stayed at the Volcano Huts for a few nights.
