Is parking ever a limiting factor at skaftafell or pingvellir. I.e., do you have to get there early in order to be able to go on hikes from these areas? Same applies to the bus pick up stop atHvollsvollur( to get to volcano huts. Ie- we are renting a car at the end of June and don’t want to miss itinerary stops simply because we cannot park while I’m at it, any advice on troll guides versus mountain guides five hour glacier hike
In our many trips to Iceland, we have never had to hunt for parking anywhere. You do need to pay for parking at quite a few places, and they mostly use apps for that, so if you have the little wifi unit with your vehicle, take that with you as you may need that to connect. Tip, when you head for home, delete your credit card information and the vehicle license plate on the app.
As for guides, we went with Troll for the glacier hike, but it is Icelandic Mountain Guides that actually runs the hikes. So Troll took us as we were on a full day excursion in the winter, and then once at the glacier, the actual guides took over. So if you are self driving, just book directly with them.
Concerning the parking apps...
What if we do not have wifi in the car? Will our phones work to get a signal while on the Golden Circle?
You may or may not have service. I have AT&T and my husband has Verizon and there were a few spots, like that Thingvellir, where we could not get service one day. Get the wifi unit with the car, it is worth it.
