One day Stopover

My daughter and I only have one day stopover. I'd love to do a Golden Circle tour and my daughter is DYING to do Blue Lagoon (seems non-negotiable). I'm trying to make it all happen, but finding difficulty in booking anything that will work with our timeline and needs (we obviously want to see it all!). It seems like I won't be able to make it easily from the airport to Raykevik for the tour pick up because of the morning traffic (according to the tour site). Has anyone had success navigating this? Should I choose one or the other and not expect that we will get both the Golden Circle and the Blue Lagoon?

Help! I'm finding it difficult to navigate Iceland!

Bonus points if you can fill in any insight for hotel with free airport shuttle and transportation help for getting to the tour and then to the hotel. Is the bus easy? Should we hire a car? HELP!

Googling "golden circle tour from keflavik airport" got me this and other links to such tours. I have no experience with them but you might want to do some more research to identify possibilities. Others here might have experience with specific tours, good or bad. But it doesn't look like you have to go into Reykjavik to get a tour. Is your "one day stopover" really a full day, i.e. two nights between flights? Googling "keflavik airport hotels" produces several choices that might enable you to do the Circle and also the Lagoon.

Reykjavik is an interesting city but not essential if your priorities are elsewhere and your time so limited.

I assume you're arriving on a red eye flight? Are you leaving Iceland the next day or the very same day?

Iceland is super easy to navigate. I've never heard of traffic, the roads are practically empty but I have no idea how long it takes to get out and into Reykjavik, taking into account going through security, collecting bags, etc. It's about 45 minutes or so from the time you leave the airport to arrive at the main bus terminal.

There are no free airport shuttles, most people take the Flybus (it pretty much has a monopoly as taxis are much more expensive - just Google "Flybus").

If I had only a day, I wouldn't try to cram everything in. I would probably just spend it in Reykjavik walking around and enjoying the city and food and maybe the Blue Lagoon on the way to the ariport (Flybus used to have combined packages with a ride to/from airport and entrance to Blue Lagoon...not sure if that's the case now). I would just consider that you may be really tired and dehydraded after a red eye flight so getting into super hot water right away may not be ideal. I would have passed out if I did that.

I would only book the tour if you're sure you can make it because, like everything else, I'm sure it's expensive and it would be a quite expensive loss if you arrived too late. Ideally, I'd try to do more than a 1 day stop-over - Iceland Air allows up to 3 days. It's worth it!

It sounds like you are flying in from North America like 6-7 am, you want to fill up a day, then flying on to Europe the following morning, is that right?

If you are up for a few hours of driving without much sleep then easiest is to drive it all yourself, Golden Circle finish about 2 then Blue Lagoon the rest of the day. There are likely some tours that leave from Keflavik as noted that will do all of these.

There's a Marriott right there 1-1/2 miles from the airport (you could walk it) but on the edge of the town of Keflavik so some dinner options, or there is a hotel right there at the airport, there might be two, and then you can just walk to everything, to and from the airport terminal, to and from the rental car.

Generally I think a stopover works better the other direction, east to west. So in your case you would transit Keflavik airport and arrive in Paris (I think that is your objective) about 1 pm, so would get to your hotel about at check in. Then returning to NA you arrive about 3-4 pm in Iceland and again it's a good check in time, and you are not exhausted from a redeye so can sight see more easily.

As a note: leaving Reykjavik on the freeway that goes east to the Golden Circle, yes at about 4 pm there was heavy traffic for a while, stop and go.

It's extraordinarily expensive (from memory about $1200/night) but there is a hotel at the Blue Lagoon with "free" access to the pools.

Thank you for the responses so far. Looks like private tour may be our only and best option. We do arrive at 6 am and stay 24 hours before leaving the next day for France. The tickets are already bought, so that's the direction we are going. I'm going to keep searching. So far, I'm disappointed in the options I'm finding.

The driving is not complicated so I would consider renting a car and doing it yourself, no more than 4 hours of driving to hit all 4 places.

If the sleep issue is bothering you, you could nap for a few hours somewhere and there will still be time to visit all 4 things starting at noon. Some hotels allow an early check in, or you could just pay for 2 nights.

Aurora Hotel on the airport grounds.

The Marriott Courtyard, closest hotel not on the airport grounds.

Cheapest might be an Airbnb in Keflavik for 2 nights, it's a town of some size.

Tom, I'm not so concerned with sleep as I am about driving in places in Iceland that may not be well marked. I have read stories of people renting cars and getting stuck in lava fields because of wrong turns and there's limited cell service. I'd prefer not renting a car for that reason.

The driving is really easy for this stretch, this is the populated part of the island. It's well-signed and all paved, it's really a breeze. There should be cell service everywhere here, although we used offline maps on a phone app.

Why not drop in in Google Maps, activate the streetview guy and look at some of the stretches of road? Your only real worry is not getting a camera fine for going too fast.

I would not rent a car for one day. I did a two night stop over and it worked well but if you are stuck with just the one night you can't do it all. I'm pretty sure I remember that even my very early arrival did not get me into Reykevik early enough for the Grand Circle Tour that day. So I just spent the first day in Reykevik (you could do Blue Lagoon that day) and did Grand Circle the next. It was a full day. Trying to rent a car and then drive yourself to all the places on the Grand Circle plus Blue Lagoon on your arrival day is not a good idea. I generally hate tours, but the one day Grand Circle Tour was good, very worth it.

Thank you Isabel! I'm currently looking into a more expensive private tour option so I can try to squeeze all the things in. But even then, I'm not sure. Sadly any google search leads me to websites that don't seem to be local. I have to really dig to find small local tour groups that I'd rather do business with.

We found a local small tour to a different area outside Reykjavik recently through Guide to Iceland. There are lots of local tours in the area, so just keep searching. I suggest that you also post on the Travel Iceland FaceBook page and the TripAdvisor Iceland forum. They both are well populated with locals and frequent travellers who are quite knowledgeable.

Is your one day in the winter or summer? Could make a big difference! When we did our Golden Circle tour many years ago in the summer, it took something like 10 hours. You might just want to rent a car, go to the Blue Lagoon and then spend some time driving around the Reykjanes Penninsula. Go back to Keflavik and spend the night close to the airport.

Driving in Iceland is very very easy (unless you are going in the winter). All roads are very well marked and we had no problems in our 10 days driving the entire Ring Road.

Whether you do a private tour or other, after that I suggest staying in Grindavik (very close to the airport) at the Northern Light Inn. It is basically right next to the Blue Lagoon, and they will shuttle you there and back. So after the tour, you could do the BL, and then come back to the hotel and have dinner. They have an excellent restaurant, Max's. Pre-covid, they would shuttle you to/from the airport as well, but I am not sure on that right now. When we stayed there this summer we had our own rental vehicle so didn't need the shuttle so did not ask about it. When our daughter when in 2019, the hotel shuttled them. Anyway, it is a very nice hotel and not outrageously priced, and the location is ideal for what you are looking for.

I went to Iceland this year and it was the first time I ever drove in a foreign country (beside Canada). I was very nervous, but driving in Iceland is so easy! Roads are very well marked and traffic is basically non existent. Plus roads are well maintained, especially the route you’ll be taking. You can easily download an offline google map of Iceland so getting lost won’t be an issue and if you are truly worried, car companies offer a WiFi hotspot for around $10/day. I definitely think renting a car and going at your own pace is the best way to go. I almost went the tour route but when I read the schedule and saw we were only getting 30 and 45 minutes at the attractions, I knew I wouldn’t be too happy. Plus, you will have to flexibility to pull off wherever you like along the golden circle route. There are pull offs everywhere and you will definitely want to stop for photos at least once.

Whichever way you end up going for your stopover, I hope you have fun! Iceland is magical and you’re going to love it.
