We will only be in Reykjavic for 48 hours and are looking for a NICE authentic Icelandic dinner for two in downtown Reykjavic. Reservations accepted preferable.
Appreciate any and all suggestions and guidance.
Two spots:
GrillMarkadurinn
Fiskmarkadurinn
High quality. A la carte or prixe fixe dining. Fiskmarkadurinn has a warmer room. Grill is larger format. Both: Local ingredients
- but I would say these places are Euro-influenced, not traditional Icelandic. I don't think either of these places have stinky shark; go to a bar for that.
Thanks Don. I'm ok with Euro influenced as long as it's Icelandic based (ie not interested in going to Iceland and eating Italian).
And, while I do like to try out the unique local cuisine, I have NO interest in sampling the stinky shark!

We had a great dinner at Messinn in downtown Reykjavik. We had Arctic char and plokkfiskur ( a local dish made with flaked fish, potato, onion, cheese). Both entrees were excellent. We made reservations before we left via e mail. Reservation was confirmed within 24 hours. Would happily return for another meal!
Thanks Mary. I did find that one online. Would definitely fit the bill for me but I see it's seafood only. My wife is looking forward to sampling the local lamb dishes. trying to find a menu that has both.
We tried the stinky shark - at a really nice restaurant in Stykkisholmur: it is awful. Smells awful, tastes worse. Must wash it down afterwards with Brennivin (which is also pretty awful).
Anyway, the two places I mentioned have seafood and meat entrees.
You'll have a great time, Reky is great
we walked into Messinn and had a wonderful dinner there! other places we ate were:
Lækjarbrekka--fancy and very delicious, they do traditional dishes here too, i believe
Resto--also so delicious, had amazing lamb here
Bryggjan Brugghús, at Grandagarður 8--we ate here twice; they had amazing fish and chips and local beers
