Need help designing a three day itinerary before our July cruise

We are two retired 66 year olds visiting Iceland for the first time in late July. Experienced travelers in decent shape that want to see a bunch but also want to be very realistic regarding our itinerary.

Our USA flight arrives at KEF at 7am on Friday, July 25th. We will have three days on our own exploring Iceland before we then board a Viking cruise at Reykjavik port on Tuesday, July 28th. The cruise is actually departing Reykjavik on Wednesday, July 29 at 6pm so we have an extra day in port to explore either the city of Reykjavik or go to a geothermal spa.

So how do we best spend the three days on our own? Here are some options we are considering but we certainly welcome all ideas ideas and coaching:

(A) Explore Golden Circle and South Coast Coast on our own:

Day 1 (7/25): Rent a car at KEF and then travel the Golden Circle. Yes, exhausting day so we would call it an early night and overnight in a hotel in that area.

Day 2 (7/26): Casually drive all day along Route 1 to Hotel Skaftafell, exploring along the way all the wonderful sights. Maybe have lunch at Vik. Overnight at Hotel Skaftafell.

Day 3 (7/27): Morning trip to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon for a zodiac boat ride and lunch, then our afternoon would be a basic glacier hike originating at Skaftafell Terminal - Tour Center. Overnight at Hotel Skaftafell again.

Day 4 (7/28): Depart Hotel Skaftafell after breakfast for our return drive to Reykjavik. We could make some brief sightseeing stops along the way as well as grab a quick lunch. Drop car at rental agency's city center location and then go to our cruise ship at the port. We would like to board the ship by 3 or 4pm.

(B) Stay in a Reykjavik hotel for all three nights and book two full-day tours while using the hotel as our base:

Day 1 (7/25): Arrive at KEF and visit Blue Lagoon for the day before taking taxi to hotel and an early dinner/bed.

Day 2 (7/26): Full day tour of the Golden Circle, then return for dinner in Reykjavik.

Day 3 (7/27): Full day tour of South Coast, traveling as far as Vik. Long tour (11 hours). Dinner at Reykjavik and crash in our hotel.

Day 4 (7/28): Check-out of our Reykjavik hotel after breakfast and explore the city, then embark on our Viking cruise ship.

BTW, Since our Viking Cruise overnights in Reykjavik before departing at 6pm on Day 5 (7/29), I suppose there is the possibility to do some other sightseeing besides exploring the city.

Finally, we are very late with our plans because we just now booked this Viking cruise last week on a whim. We are already behind the eight ball with many hotels completely booked during our timeframe and, unfortunately, those hotels with availability are only offering sky-high peak rates. Same for rental cars with very high daily rates during our timeframe. Regardless, we could not be more excited to visit Iceland in July!

Thanks in advance for your thoughts here and any other coaching you might have for us first-time visitors!

Option A is not the best. The reasons are that day 1 is wayyyy too much after na overnight flight. It is wise to only drive maybe an hour after arrival. Day 2 would be a minimum of 4 hours drive time. Day 4 would be a minimum of 5 hours drive time, and roads can closed (accidents, roads washed out by flooding etc) so you do not want to chance not getting back in time to board the cruise.

Option B is much better. Blue Lagoon is fine, but take a look at Sky Lagoon as well. That one is in Reykjavik and the 7 step ritual is wonderful. You could also do a food tour (plenty of food for lunch and dinner) and/or the Citywalk "free" walking tour (tip at the end). Your days 2 and 3 though would be better if you do a 2 day south coast tour. It would not be as rushed.

For your last free day you could rent a car and head up to Borgarnes and see the Settlement Center, check out Akranes, head back down to Hvammsvik Hot Spring, and then back to Reykjavik. Or head to the Golden Circle and do Thingvellir, Gullfoss, and Bruarfoss. I would skip Geysir due to time.

Yes, prices rise considerably when you are booking as late as this. Most people book 9-12 months in advance, so you are at the mercy now. Cars are always expensive though.

Option B would be my choice. I basically did a similar itinerary on my visit to Iceland, except I did a food tour on one afternoon (wonderful). You'll want to lock down your day tour reservations ASAP - lots of tour companies, have a look through prior posts in this forum for suggestions.

Option 2 is better.

Day 1: A popular tour agency is Reykjavik Excursions
They offer a transfer from airport to the Blue Lagoon and then transport to downtown Reykjavik.
BL has a luggage storage facility.
https://www.re.is/tour/keflavik-blue-lagoon-comfort-admission-and-transfer/
So I would look at this rather than a taxi from the BL to downtown, The taxi would be very expensive.

RE also offers day trips to the golden Circle and back, and the south coast.

On Day 4, I would take a free walking tour at 10:30 am, then afterwards take a taxi (with your luggage)to the cruise port.
Or see if the free shuttle from the harpa concert halll to the cruise port is running and take that (with your luggage)
Your cruise doesn't leave until 6 pm, right? and boarding doesn't start until 1 pm?

I think viking's included tour is a visit to the Arbaer Open air musuem and a drive around downtown. Their tour ends at the Harpa Concert Hall and from there you catch the free shuttle bus back to the ship or explore on your own.

We’ve done the two tours mentioned with Grayline and were satisfied with them. I would use a tour company rather than drive.

I checked and the place i have stayed twice is booked. Wow, I feel your pain with the sky high prices !

Driving in Iceland is very easy. If you decide on a tour, think about whether you want a big bus or a small group. We have done a few day trips in the winter that required a guide, so used www.troll.is for that as they do small groups, around 12-16 people. With what you want to do though, driving would be easy and the most flexible for you.

Definitely option B, except instead of returning to Reykjavik after Golden Circle, go south and stay in Selfoss or Hella so you are closer to Vik and Jokulsarlon. It is a LONG drive back from Vik to Reykjavik. Enjoy!

Thank you to all for sharing your perspectives, we appreciate your specific recommendations and links to past trip reports. We've now landed on our Option #2, intending to base our stay in Reykjavik for three nights and joining the day tours to Golden Circle and South Coast. You guys are the best!
