Any suggestions on shoes / gaiters for kids traveling the south coast and golden circle in early/mid April? Kids are 8 and 10.
Also wonder if you recommend a small group tour of south coast or renting a car and doing it yourself that time of year?

April is still winter there, so driving could be an issue. It is low season though, so you could decide last minute whether to rent a car or take a tour. I would only rent a car if you have experience driving in bad weather. If you do this, be sure to check road and weather conditions multiple times a day as weather there changes in an instant. The small group tours are fantastic. We have done that a few times due to needing a guide for certain excursions. I have had great luck with Troll, FWIW.
As for gaiters, I would not worry about those and have never used them in all of our trips there. Just good sturdy boots, and if it is icy, have some Yaktrax that you can throw on the boots for traction.
