January South Coast Private Tour

We are thinking of planning a northern lights focused trip to Iceland in January. We are considering a private tour of the South Iceland for our group of 4 or 5 so that we can go at our own pace. Please let me know if you have any recommendations for a tour company or thoughts about whether this a good idea.

A private day tour will run about $1500-$1800. That is for a day tour, but you are asking for northern lights so that would turn it into a multi day tour, which you would need to reach out to the various companies and see what they can do for you.

Here are some tour companies that are local to Iceland, and that we have used and are very good. Troll.is , adventures.is , bustravel.is , and nicetravel.is . We have used Troll a number of times and then the next two just twice. We had a tour scheduled with Arctic Adventures, but it was cancelled due to weather, but how they handled it all was excellent. FWIW, I would have no worries booking with any of these companies.

January is not necessarily the best time since weather can be more stormy and more clouds. FWIW, October has been the best for us for seeing the northern lights. We have had some spectacular shows during that month on several trips. Later September is good too. Our February trips were just ok, and our March trip was just a tease.

If you want to do a tour from Reykjavik for just one evening, I highly recommend www.auroraexperts.is . We have used him several times and he is excellent! His private tours run about $1800, but that is strictly for a northern lights tour for Reykjavik for one evening. If you want to have him take you up the south coast, you would need to email him and see what he is willing to do.

Another tour operator for northern lights that I have heard good things about, but have no personal experience with, is Danny Kaye at www.auroraman.net .
