January car rental

Is it reasonable for us to rent a car in January to get from the airport to Reykjavik?
Will road conditions be bad?

Will you be using the car besides getting from the airport?

It's a 45 minute drive from the airport and a car is not a good idea on the city.

We are using the car to make a stop at the Blue Lagoon and then turn it in when arrive in the city. Just wasn’t sure about ice or snows on roads in January

The weather in January would be too difficult to predict. It could be anything. Renting a car for just the day as you planned, could pan out or not. If this were me, I would rent the car and then wait until the day before arriving and check the forecast. If there has not been a storm, then keep your plans of renting the car. If weather has turned, cancel the car and take the Flybus. If road conditions are really bad, the road will close, although that doesn't happen often for this stretch. We almost always have had a rental car even on winter trips where we have mostly based out of Reykjavik. We never use it for in town, but have been glad to have it for the rest of the trip, FWIW. I just mention this not knowing what the rest of your itinerary entails.

That’s very helpful. Thanks
We are based in Reykjavik and are there only 5 days. It was cheaper to do the car with 8 people with the stop at the Blue Lagoon. We have reservations for 8 am.
We are looking for Northern Lights mainly. Any advice is appreciated. We have booked a Northern Lights tour, Golden Circle and south coast.
