Is Iceland in May worth it?

For hiking, yes May is early. There are some areas that you can, but it will be a wait and see thing. That said, Iceland has so much to offer that even if you can't hike you won't be bored by any means. We have another trip on the books for May, FWIW.

The later, the better.

We just got back, June 15-29. Went for hiking, rained or wind prevented us from several of the hikes, also snowfields that were just not safe to traverse. I'd recommend if you are hiking go in July/Aug. Sorry, since that's busy season, but if you are hiking, you are not with the tourist buses at waterfall sights... the hikes we did get in, maybe a couple of there people on that trail, in one case, no one.

In the 2 weeks there, we had 3 days of sun, the rest of the time overcast and rain. One hike we started we had to abandon to to high winds, felt like we were getting blown off the trail.

August is a great time there, several of our trips have been during that time. You will most likely still get wind and rain, but hopefully a bit less. Iceland is just very fickle and you have to assume you will have a bit of everything at any time of year:)

Two things to consider or August. One, if you want to go to Westman Islands, know that the first full weekend in August is the largest music festival in the country. Normally Heimaey has a population of 4k, but the weekend an additional 22k people arrive for it. We left the day it started and wow, the people watching was phenomenal, lol! Then also, the earlier in the month is better if you want to see puffins as they tend to leave by mid/late August.

We plan to be there the last week in July, and although not doing lots of fancy hiking, I hope we can get a couple of the ones we want in (they are on the South Coast, so thinking that would be an okay time there). The next two weeks look windy and cloudy, so hoping statistics are on our side and it will get a little bit warmer and less wet for our trip.

Maryan--The weather forecast in Iceland is worthless unless it is 1, maximum, 2 days in advance. The weather changes so much so unfortunately looking at a long term forecast now would be like throwing darts into the wind. Don't worry though, it is Iceland it is all good! Just have waterproof jackets, rain pants and sturdy boots and you are set:)

I figured the forecast was a bit useless, but for some reason I keep looking. :) Guess I'm just excited. I also fretted about the weather going to Ireland, and although the forecast was rain everyday, we actually had really really nice weather. Fingers crossed. And as you said, it's Iceland, so it will all be lovely regardless.

Maryam--I still look at the forecasts for various places in Iceland before our trips. The excitement is just too much sometimes;)
