Yes, new have camped at Heydalur:). It is one of my favorite places up there. There is a swimming pool inside the greenhouse, and then a hot springs just outside of that and then again a natural hot spring down the hill just over the other side of the creek. You can ride horses there too. We did and it was low tide, so we were able to ride along the fjord. Look at Horgshlidarlaug which is not far from there. It is a hot spring (in a pool) right on the fjord. There is a small changing room there and you just park along the road. The fjord is the cold plunge:)
Near Holmavik is Dragsnes, which has a great hot pot there which is 3 tubs that sit right next to the water. One is cold, one is warm and one is hot. It is cash only and the lady does come to check that everyone has paid. It is 1000kr per person, and there is a little collection box on the inside of the gate where you enter. There is parking and changing rooms right across the road.
Look at doing a kayak trip out of Grundarfjordur on Snaefellsness with Vesture Adventures. We did the fishing trip one with our adult kids one year and had the best time and my husband keeps telling me that we need to do it again.
There is a sweet little"hike", which is basically just a short walk up a rocky hill, called Helgafell just outside of Stikkisholmur. The story goes, if you walk up without looking back at all and without uttering a word, at the top you get 3 wishes. You can't tell anyone what those are. Again, this is cash only and they ask for 450 kr per person a there is a little glass jar for it on the deck of the little building next to where the trail starts. There is also a toilet across from that building.
On your way up or back from Snaefellsness, look at Hvammsvik Hot Springs. It is about 45 minutes north of Reykjavik and is our favorite commercial lagoon in all of our trips.
If you take the ferry up to the Westfjords, head to Helulaug hot spring which is about 5-10 minutes from the ferry. No area to change, so maybe do that on the ferry in the restroom before you disembark, or change in your car. There is no set fee, but there is a donation box in the parking lot. A bit of a warning, it is slippery as you get in. I went head first, not by choice;). Beautiful little spot!
From Isafjordur, look at Borea Adventures. We did a kayak trip with them right there in the bay and then did a full day hiking trip at Hornstrandir. Both were excellent!
There are so many places to stop along the drive, so if you do this, be sure to plan ahead so you don't miss some of the best places. Plus you will find your own places to stop. That is one thing I love about Iceland is that there is always something that you didn't know existed:)
