Iceland with tweens/teens - Itinerary help

Hello!
My husband and 2 kids (age 15 and almost 12) are heading to Iceland for 8 days this summer. We are looking forward to seeing the amazing landscape, hiking and the geothermal pools. We don't really want a lot of crowds and were thinking of skipping the Golden Circle.

We are flying into Reykjavik. My thought is that we spend 1-2 nights there before heading to Snaefellsnes for a few days. We could then head north to Westfjords. We would eventually need to end up in Reykjavik to head home.

Our constraints: my husband has insomnia, so we'd prefer not to change lodging locations often. I also dislike long drives, so would prefer stops within 2 hours if possible.

In an ideal world, we'd stay in 1 or 2 places for a few nights each and do day trips from those places.

Questions:

How long is too long to stay in Snaefellsnes? is 3 days too long?
Is everything in Westfjords very far apart? Will we be driving for hours each day to get around if we go there?
Do people ever do day trips from Snaefellsnes to Westfjords?

Any recommendations would be welcome. I also worry that my children won't be engaged by the amount of nature this trip will involve... hoping they can embrace it!

Thank you!

Good call on skipping the GC/south coast since you don't like crowds;)

I would stay in Reykjavik only 1 night, to get over jetlag. See the city and enjoy it on food on arrival day, and then in the morning head out. Snaefellsness has plenty to keep you busy for 2-3 days easily! The Westfjords are beautiful, but remote, so yes you will be driving a lot between places. Especially from the ferry dock up to Dynjandi. We have taken the ferry over from Stikkisholmur and then driven back down and were happy with that route, FWIW. There is no way I would suggest a day trip to the Westfjords. You could take the ferry over and see one teensy tiny bit of it, but that's it.

Iceland overall is not like other places where you can really stay in one place and base out of there to go see things, otherwise you will be doing a LOT of backtracking. With your limited time, I would do 1 night Reykjavik, 2 nights Stikkisholmur or nearby, 2 nights Isafjordur, 1 night Heydalur, 1 night around Holmavik and then the last night back in Reykjavik. I know the one nighters are not what you are wanting, but it is the best say to actually see the area.

Are you interested in hiking, kayaking, etc?

Thanks for responding! I think we'd enjoy kayaking and hiking, hot pots, potentially horseback riding, visiting sheep.

I had not heard of Heydalur, but it looks like a terrific spot to stop for a night or two! Thank you for that tip! Have you stayed there?

Yes, new have camped at Heydalur:). It is one of my favorite places up there. There is a swimming pool inside the greenhouse, and then a hot springs just outside of that and then again a natural hot spring down the hill just over the other side of the creek. You can ride horses there too. We did and it was low tide, so we were able to ride along the fjord. Look at Horgshlidarlaug which is not far from there. It is a hot spring (in a pool) right on the fjord. There is a small changing room there and you just park along the road. The fjord is the cold plunge:)

Near Holmavik is Dragsnes, which has a great hot pot there which is 3 tubs that sit right next to the water. One is cold, one is warm and one is hot. It is cash only and the lady does come to check that everyone has paid. It is 1000kr per person, and there is a little collection box on the inside of the gate where you enter. There is parking and changing rooms right across the road.

Look at doing a kayak trip out of Grundarfjordur on Snaefellsness with Vesture Adventures. We did the fishing trip one with our adult kids one year and had the best time and my husband keeps telling me that we need to do it again.

There is a sweet little"hike", which is basically just a short walk up a rocky hill, called Helgafell just outside of Stikkisholmur. The story goes, if you walk up without looking back at all and without uttering a word, at the top you get 3 wishes. You can't tell anyone what those are. Again, this is cash only and they ask for 450 kr per person a there is a little glass jar for it on the deck of the little building next to where the trail starts. There is also a toilet across from that building.

On your way up or back from Snaefellsness, look at Hvammsvik Hot Springs. It is about 45 minutes north of Reykjavik and is our favorite commercial lagoon in all of our trips.

If you take the ferry up to the Westfjords, head to Helulaug hot spring which is about 5-10 minutes from the ferry. No area to change, so maybe do that on the ferry in the restroom before you disembark, or change in your car. There is no set fee, but there is a donation box in the parking lot. A bit of a warning, it is slippery as you get in. I went head first, not by choice;). Beautiful little spot!

From Isafjordur, look at Borea Adventures. We did a kayak trip with them right there in the bay and then did a full day hiking trip at Hornstrandir. Both were excellent!

There are so many places to stop along the drive, so if you do this, be sure to plan ahead so you don't miss some of the best places. Plus you will find your own places to stop. That is one thing I love about Iceland is that there is always something that you didn't know existed:)

Another question!
We are thinking of reversing itinerary - going to Westfjords before Snaefellsnes. How long does it take to drive from Reykyavik to Holmavik? Should we stop overnight on the way?

Are you flying in from the US? If so, stay the first night in Reykjavik and head out in the morning. Drive time alone from there up to Holmavik will be at least 4 hours without stops. I would not stay overnight along the way unless there was some place you really wanted to stay.

Thanks! Yes, flying in from the US. Would you stop somewhere between Reykjavik and Holmavik? It would be nice to break up the drive a little.

Definitely plan to stay in Reykjavik or the first night, do not try to drive further. Then I would just drive up to Holmavik the next day, but stop at any sights along the way.
