Arriving on August 2 and leaving August 7
Any suggestions on how long and where to stay in Reykjavik upon arrival?
What do people do about arriving at 6am? Do you reserve a room for the night before or are some hotels kind enough to let you check in earlier?

I suggest you do a search on this forum for hotel suggestions . There is a very recent thread (thread title is small group tours ) or similar to.that where several hotel hotels are recommended. Also are you renting a car to drive around or taking day trips out/ back. That info will be helpful for others to respond. You should also do a simple search of this forum and Trip advisor forum for what others have done.
As for the early arrival..if you want to be assured of getting into your room.best to book for night before ( then contact hotel to let them know what your plans are so they are aware). August is busy season and I would not anticipate the hotel would let you check in early due to capacity. You could go to hotel , drop luggage and wander about until check-in time as well

Thank you! Yes, I will search the forum again but so far most things have been filled. I did find room at a line of hotels called Center Hotels and also Hotel Reykjavík Centrum.
I thought we would spend a night or two in Reykjavik and then maybe do the Golden Ring tour. Not sure what else yet.
One friend told me she thought I should rent a car and drive Northwest because it will be less touristy and crowded. I'm trying to decide whether that's a good idea since I would be the only driver...thoughts?
