Iceland October Suggestions

We will be heading to Iceland Oct 20-29 and would appreciate guidance on an itinerary, and best way to book it. We are planning to rent a car so that we have flexibility regarding pace and excursions. We are interested in seeing the Northern Lights if possible, and as much of Iceland as is reasonable in late October.

It seems that booking accommodation etc. is much cheaper than using an agency with a package. Is that true? If so, any suggestions on a preferred itinerary? If not, any suggestions on a high quality company to book through to get our accommodation and experiences?

Help is appreciated!! Thank you:)

We have been twice in October and lucked out with the weather both times, but do be prepared for road closures and be very flexible as the weather can be anything. We did an Icelandair Package on one of the trips, only because it was such a deal. We skipped most of the stuff in the package though as we rented a car and did our own thing. IME, rates for hotel can be hit or miss. They are not always cheaper through a package, but it can very a lot.

I would not use an agency to book accommodations or experiences. Just book direct. With just 9 days, I would stick to the south coast and possibly Snaefellsness if weather is good and time allows. You definitely want to be back close to KEF/Reykjavik your last night to make sure you are not stuck with a road closure etc.

As for experiences, what is it that drew you to Iceland? There is so much to see and do, and never enough time, so think about what works best for winter activities. We have enjoyed a glacier hike, Katla Ice Cave, hiking (weather dependent) and lagoons on our fall and winter trips, to give you an idea.
