Iceland itinerary

Hi, I’m wondering what people think of this itinerary. We’re a family of 5 (2 adults and 3 kids ages 9-16). We will be there this summer and are renting a car. Does this seem reasonable? Any suggestions? I don’t want to over-plan and not be able to fit it all in, but I also want to make the most of our time there. Thank you!

Day 1: Arrive in Reykjavik in morning, head to Blue Lagoon, check in to Airbnb, explore city

Day 2: Golden Circle

Day 3: Day trip to Snæfellsnes (horseback riding excursion in evening out of Reykjavik?)

Day 4: Drive to Vik to next Airbnb and take in stops along the way

Day 5: Explore Vik and area and Black Sand Beach (ice cave and jeep tour excursion?)

Day 6: Day trip to Jökulsárlón, Diamond Beach, Vatnajökull National Park, take in stops along way and back

Day 7: Drive from Vik back to Reykjavik for early evening flight, can use morning for stops or activity we don’t have time for earlier

I would change it up a bit. Day 1 is great. After that, I would suggest heading up to Snaefellsness and stay the night up there. There is so much to see up there. Day 3 head to the Golden Circle and stay somewhere there for the night. Day 4, head to Vik. You could stay those 3 nights in Vik, but you might consider a night closer to Jokulsarlon. Day 6 head back down towards Selfoss and stay there for that last night. You can ride horses there. We did it at Eldhestar and had a great time, and stayed there on the last night of one of our trips. With any extra time that day, you could explore the Reykjanes Peninsula before heading back to KEF.

Katla is the only ice cave that is open in the summer now, after last summers accident at another one. We used Troll.is for this and they pick up in Vik. It was a lot of fun!

At Jokulsarlon, the zodiac boat tour is excellent! We have done it a few times. Definitely have a waterproof phone case on a lanyard for this.

Thank you - I will look into that. We tried to plan around only two bases though because we’ve learned from previous trips that our kids don’t do so well with having to move locations each night, so we prefer to limit the number of lodging changes. I know that’s a trade off with driving though. I can see if this other approach is worth it.

Which is harder on the kids -- changing lodging every day or riding in the car for long periods of time? Maybe the kids could pack their own "overnight" bag with essentials and a change of clothes, and then that's all they'd have to tote in and out as you move lodging.

They are definitely better with long car rides than with changing lodgings, which is why I took the approach I did. Just wondering if it’s reasonable or if we’re being unrealistic.
