Iceland in the fall

I'm coming Sept 28 to Oct 9th 2024. I'm a landscape photographer and looking to rent a 4x4 and do my own trip.
With it being low season, should I pre book or can I wing it when I arrive.

Cheers

Do not try to wing it! It is still somewhat high season as people come for the northern lights. We have been many times and I know to book things about 9-2 months in advance. However we decided on a whim at the end of march yo come next month. Yes even then it was very hard to find lodging I had to really finagle the itinerary to make it work.

Iceland in the fall is gorgeous, but you need up secure lodging like yesterday. I would also took any activities you may be interested in.

If you’ll be circumnavigating Iceland in a vehicle or touring the Ring Road, you may find there are not enough accommodations to meet the demand of traveling visitors. There are, however, a lot of campgrounds so you could sleep in the 4x4 in a pinch with a sleeping bag. Bringing a tent expands your options.

One way to answer your question would be to look for lodging on your proposed route. Quick way to find out what is available. If you find something that looks good, you should grab it after checking cancellation policy.
