We are planning a trip in July to Iceland. We are a family of 5 including 3 teen/young adult kids. We've travelled quite a bit both in Europe and throughout the US (National Parks) and we love nature and adventure. We have 12 nights (not including the overnight flight from Chicago).
I plan to use the Rick Steves Itinerary in his book, but I have a couple of nights to add to it and I am looking for suggestions.
Day 1 - Arrive at Airport. Visit Blue Lagoon. Overnight in Reykjavík
Day 2 - Spend in Reykjavik Overnight Again
Day 3 - Snaefellnes Peninsula. Overnight near Grundarfjordur.
Day 4 - Finish Snaefellnes. Drive to Skagafjordur as we start the Ring Road Tour. Overnight Skagafjordur countryside or Siglufjordur (which is preffered?)
Day 5 - Drive the Trollaskagi Peninsula. Drive to Akureyri for lunch. See Godafoss. Drive to Myvatn or Husavik for overnight.
Day 6 - Mvatn and Husavik Area and Overnight.
Day 7 - Drive to Eastfjords. Sleep in Seydisfjordur
Day 8 - Drive along the Eastfjords to the SouthEast. Sleep near Hofn or Jokulsarlon (I originally planned to stay 2 nights in this area, but it is the most expensive - so I would rather add this night somewhere else - this is my main question - where?)
Day 9 - Wrap up Glacier activities. Drive to Vik for Overnight
Day 10 - Westman Islands - Maybe overnight?
Day 11 - ? Add an extra day in this area, or move it somewhere earlier?
Day 12 - Golden Circle to Overnight near the airport or in Reykjavich
Day 13 - Fly Home
So the question is where do I add that one extra night that is currently day 11. I haven't booked beyond the first couple of days, so I can add it anywhere into the schedule. Another night on South Coast? Another night near Siglufjordur? Add a night somewhere else? I want to finalize the itinerary so I can get everything booked! Any other suggestions! Thanks for your help!
Also, do you recommend using booking or airbnb or something else for a family of 5? I have the Rick Steves book, so I can use that too, but I sometimes find it hard to use for a bigger family.
