Iceland day tours and hotels

We are planning on doing small group day trip tours to the Golden Circle, South Coast and possibly the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. Could anyone recommend some good tour companies for these itineraries? Also we are using Reykjavik our base and would appreciate any hotel recommendations?

Thanks, Jim S., Chicago

We have used www.troll.is a number of times and really like them. They do small groups which is nice. That said, are you set on staying in Reykjavik? I ask because that is not the best use of time. You could do a 2-3 night south coast tour, or a 4-5 day south coast/Snaefellsness tour. You would not need to worry about booking hotels as they have that set for you. This would maximize your time. If you want to stay in Reykjavik though, here are some hotels that we have stayed at and like. Several of these we have stayed at multiple times.

Hotel Fron
4th Floor Hotel
Center Hotel Midgardur
Center Hotel Laugavegur
Center Hotel Plaza
The Centrum

Do you have to use Reykjavik as a base? It would be a much more enjoyable trip if you could do a multi-day south coast tour like the previous poster recommended. No need to drive back and forth along the same road every day. That would be a waste of time.

Most recommended are Troll Expeditions, Arctic Adventures, Reykjavik Expeditions, and Nordic Visitor.

We used Grayline twice and were pleased with them.

We twice stayed at the SKOLAVORDUSTIGUR ( sorry, I can’t type the marks over O and D ) apartments. Very nice location down the street from the big church

I booked thru booking.com.

Another vote for NOT using Reykjavik as a base and doing day trips. You will be wasting valuable vacation time going back and forth over the same roads. Much much better to do a multi-day south coast tour (or Golden Circle/South Coast) where you actually have time to see and do things.

I can also reccomend the Center Hotel Laugavegur. I'll be back there in three weeks.
