Iceland 8 Days Help needed

Dear Rick Steves community.

I am looking to do Iceland Golden Circle and Ring by the end of June - beginning of July. 8 days, the day 9th before departing the next day I will leave it for Reykjavik.
I am planning to drive, I am looking for recommendations on where to stop each day for to sleep and recommendations for affordable accommodations with private room and bathroom. in the $150-175 range with stunning views :). It could be a little bit higher. I was planning first golden ring, and then do south and start counter clockwise.
I am creating an itinerary on what I plan to see each day, I will later share.
If you can give an advice what is a must see, each day and where I should stop to sleep and which hotels, or airbb so I can finish this in the 8 days that will be appreciated.
Thank you !
Janet

The host of this site has some suggestions: https://www.ricksteves.com/europe/iceland/itinerary

It is rather late to be making reservations for a summer trip, as Iceland is very busy and things book up 9-12 months ahead in summer. It literally may come down to whether you can find accommodations. I recommend you not do a lot of heavy driving on your arrival day if you are coming from the US as jet lag and driving don't mix (in my opinion).

Thank you so much! hopefully I will find the accommodations that make me nervous. Based on your comments.

This is a tough one. With just 8 days, I would not recommend the Ring Road. You can drive it in that time, but you will be having to push on each day and won't have time to actually stop and see the things that are unique to Iceland.

That said, the day of arrival it is wise to only drive about an hour, so driving to Reykjavik is perfect and then check into your lodging and explore the city on foot. The next day venture out.

Most people book their lodging 9-12 months in advance, and you are coming at the height of the summer, so you will be hard pressed to find anything in your budget, I am sorry to say. You won't find anything with stunning views in that price range, and probably not a private bath.

To give you an idea, on my most recent trip there last September, we booked it on a whim, so only had 5.5 months before our trip. Even in September many places were booked out, and we did have to top for shared baths at once place. We paid around $200-$250 per night. I also had to finagle the itinerary just to find lodging.

Ok, now that I have been the Debbie Downer, here is a good alternative. With 8 days, a really nice trip is the south coast, the Golden Circle and Snaefellsness. This will fill your time.

If you guys can help me out with what to see and do on those in fact 9 days, that will be appreciated!
I am considering the suggestion below, I just need suggestions to plan in out and for the experienced travels to recommend should be stops for accommodation, once i know that, I can look for accommodations. Thanks again!!!

Here are my thoughts on your proposed itinerary.

Day 1 is wayyyyy too much. Jet leg is real, especially when you are in a car. Accidents due to tired tourists is a big problem in Iceland so it is wise to keep that arrival days driving to a minimum, like an hour or so at the most. So basically day 1 should be just an arrive and settle in day.

It would make more sense to do Landmannalaugar at the beginning of the trip to save on backtracking.

Your day 7 is a really long day. It will be a minimum of 6-6.5 hours of driving with no stops. There are so many great stops on Snaefellsness so this could easily turn into a 15 hour day if you are not careful.

As I mentioned earlier, your day 8 doesn't make sense, so do that at the beginning.

This is still all extremely rushed. On the trip that we did the ring road, we had 12 nights, and while we did a lot and are not slow travelers, we also missed so much. I guess that is one reason why we keep returning. Our 8th visit is this summer, and we will be returning for more, just to give you an idea.

Have you looked into lodging availability at all yet?

I urge you to heed mikliz97 as they have been to Iceland many, many times and know the drill. I have only been for a 7 day trip and your suggested itinerary above makes me exhausted just thinking about it. I appreciate the desire to "see it all" but it looks like you would mostly see it from the inside of a car as you rush past to get to the next thing. If that is your travel style, great, but it wouldn't be my preference.

Again, at this late stage your choices for lodging may be very limited. And you haven't mentioned it but if you don't have a car rental secured that should be taken care of immediately.

In May 2019 as a graduation gift for our daughter we drove the ring. We used the Express Iceland tour company. Our tour was 8 days and included airport transfers, nightly hotels, and car rental at a reasonable price. The beauty of the tour was that the reservations were made for us, but we were able to drive at our own pace and see the things we wanted to see. Whether you could make arrangements for this summer is questionable, but there are several companies that have similar tours.

I am repeating myself but Day 1 is way too much driving for a jet lagged arrival day - you have at least 5 hours of driving time to see all those things, not including the actual time for stopping and seeing the sights. Unless you have extensive personal experience driving safely in an unfamiliar landscape while jet lagged, I suggest you cut out some of golden circle portions and see those on your return back on days 5 and 6. On day 6 don't drive all the way to Snaefellsnes - you're back at the airport. Instead do your Reykjavik time on days 5/6 and do days 7/8 on the way to a hotel near the airport for your final night.

Please do not stick to that day 1 itinerary. It its flat out unsafe for you and everyone else on the road with you. This is personal to me because my aunt became a paraplegic due to falling asleep at the wheel, so I know exactly what can and does happen. She was lucky she didn't hurt or kill anyone else. Your day 1 is just foolish.

Thank you so much I will remove some of the items here for day one and I will follow the suggestion from you both, I will re-send the new schedule for your thoughts, thank you so much!

Basically, it would be wise to remove everything on day one and just pick up the car and head to Reykjavik. Even without activities, going to Vik upon arrival is not wise.

Oh this sis so much better!

On Day 2, do not miss Bruarfoss. It is right there in the Golden Circle and does not take much time.

On Day 3, if you are up for it the zodiac boat tour at Jokulsarlon is a blast! We have done it a few times and just love it.

On Day 5, the Hengifoss hike is beautiful and not hard at all. It is on a somewhat steepish path, but it is paved and you just go at your own pace. Once at the top, you can sit by the creek that runs off from the waterfall and have a picnic lunch. When we have been there, there has also been an ice cream truck across from the parking lot;)

On Day 6, you could do Katla ice cave as that is a year round one. Right near Vik is Reynisfjara black sand beach which is very interesting. There is a warning system as you walk to the beach, so stop and read it and heed any warnings. This beach has a lot of sneaker waves, so you have to be very careful. Do not go into the cave, and do not go below the water line in the sand, and of course never turn your back on the ocean. Not far from there is Yoda Cave, that is interesting. Both of these have pay parking lots now, which is new. Also near Vik is Solheimajokull which is a glacier that you can just look at, or do a glacier hike. The glacier hike is not difficult at all and is beautiful! If you want to do this, book directly through the operator at https://www.mountainguides.is

Day 7 is a bit confusing as Reynisfjara is right by Vik, so it makes sense to do it from there. BTW it is the Golden Circle, not the Golden Ring;) There is no Golden Ring, I think you are thinking of the Ring Road. I would stay this night in or around Akranes. This would give you a jump start on Snaefellesness the next day, but also would make the drive from Vik to there not terrible as it is only about 3+ hours drive time. So a few stops to break it up, go to Akranes and enjoy a soak there that night and then head out in the morning. An alternative would to be push a bit further and stay in Borgarnes, which would make the drive about 3.5 hours. If this were me, I would opt for Borgarnes just because it makes the next day easier. Also, in Borgarness is the Settlement Center which is quite interesting.

Day 8 If you start in Borgarnes and do Snaefellsness peninsula (all the way to the west, not cutting up halfway) and then back to Borgarnes for the night, it is only about 4+ hours drive time. If you start in Akranes, it is about 4.5 hours drive time. The two towns ae pretty close as you can see. I would stay in one of these towns this night instead of trying to get back to Reykjavik. Just do that in the morning and you will still have all day for Reykjavik.

Day 9 Head back to Reykjavik. If you want to soak, Hvammsvik would be ideal as it is only our way back down. Stay in Reykjavik and see anything you missed on the first day and then get ready to fly home the next day.

Hello,
One more question, I booked a couple of hotels for two people, I am thinking to add my niece to the trip, do I need to inform the accommodations, are they any restriction to add one person?

Thank you
Janet

You will not be able to add another person unless you get a triple room.

I agree that your modified itinerary is much more reasonable than your first two. mikliz97 is the expert on the driving routes so follow their advice. You mentioned an early departure time for your flight back. You need to allow minimum 45 minute drive time to airport, plus time to return rental, AND arrive at least 2.5 - 3 hours ahead of your flight departure time. It may seem like the airport is small, but it is VERY busy and can be excruciatingly slow at check in and security. Plan accordingly.

I'm unclear if you are traveling solo and wanting to add your niece to a reservation made for two people? If that is the case, then you would be ok because you told them there are two people. If you booked a double bed for one person, you can't add her without telling the hotel - they charge based on people, not beds. If there are two of you traveling and you want to add a third person, you need to pay for the additional person and probably get a different type of room that will fit all of you.

CL--Good catch! I just assumed it was for 2 people, but reread and am unsure now. I agree with everything you wrote about lodging:)

There is one company - Glacier Lagoon Boat Tours. The Zodiac boat will get you closer to the icebergs and the front of the glacier and is tons of fun, but it is a very bumpy ride. Do make reservations well in advance.
