Hi! Found a great Delta award (60K direct from Detroit!) in July. I've already booked an airbnb in the South Shore area for 3 nights, and think we will do Camp Boutique for a night (glamping!). That leaves 3 nights - was planning Reykjavik, but, wondering if 2 nights is best there. Our flight leaves at 6am, so, better to stay by airport the last night, instead of 3 nights in Reykjavik? We are renting a vehicle for self-guided traveling. For reference, family of 3, teenage daughter of 15. Thanks!
At Keflavik airport, I can recommend the Hotel Aurora. It is literally a three minute walk to the terminal and they start the included breakfast at 4 AM.
I've stayed there a couple of times. It's basic but clean. Very convenient.
Most people find three nights in Reykjavik to be too many. Spend one of those three nights somewhere on the south coast. After spending the day before your flight doing things in Reykjavik, then you could drive to the airport and spend the night there.
I would stay the first night in Reykjavik and explore the city (LOTS to do!) and then head do the south coast the next day. For our last night stay somewhere close to the airport. We have enjoyed the Northern Light Inn in Grindavik, which is about 15-10 minutes away. You could do their float pods before dinner there and that would be a wonderful last night.
Personally, with jet lag, two nights in Reykjavik is perfect for me and it's what I've done on my 3 trips to Iceland. You have an entire day to see the city and hit the highlights, and then take off after night #2 to go to the other places you want to visit. Make a reservation at Aurora for the last night before your early flight. It's right next to the rental car places and just across a smallish parking lot from the terminal - super convenient and easy!
Thanks all for the tips and recs.
Have decided to do an AirBnb near Hella the first 3 nights, Black Rock Suites for a night (all that was available!), Reykjavik for 2, then airport hotel for the last night so we aren't rushing in the morning.
