Hotels in Reykjavik

Not sure if there is a better way to search for hotel advice on this site? We are stopping over in Iceland for 4 nights on a trip home from Europe at the end of July. Looking for something quiet and clean that might be in walking distance of restaurants. We will rent a car so could also drive into town if there's something better just beyond town. I'm having a hard time judging what they are like from the websites. We are older (60s) and willing to splurge a little ($250/night or even more if we have to?) Thanks!

You may want to look at Booking.com where you can see the hotels on a map, read reviews, see pictures, etc. I use it for research and then go to the hotel's own website for pricing and more information. Enjoy your visit there - it's a beautiful country!

We were there in mid-June a few years back. Reykjavik makes Paris look cheap. We ended up renting an AirBnb so that we could have save some money on meals as well as lodging. As an example of prices, a can of Tuborg cost $4.50 at the grocery store. This is one place where it might be worth it to stop at the duty-free before you leave the airport. Whatever you decide, make sure there are sun blocking curtains in the bedroom.. In July, there will be mostly daylight/twilight. And bring warm clothes you can layer. All that sunlight doesn't make it warm. Never got above 55 while we were there in June.

This past July, I stayed at the Hotel Fron in Reykjavík. Right in the middle of downtown. Walkable to most of the sites and to many restaurants. Nothing luxurious, but clean and pleasant. Quite a few hotels in the same area.

My advice right now is to act quickly in booking a hotel in Reykjavík or elsewhere. Iceland is very popular at the moment and hotels books quickly. Delay and you risk not finding a place to your preference or near to where you really want to be.

If you haven’t been to Iceland previously, you are in for a treat. Wonderful place. Have a great time!

I would not stay in Reykjavik for 4 nights. Depending on what time you arrive, either stay that night in town or if you arrive earlier then head out on a road trip. There is SO much to see in Iceland! We have been many times and just keep going back as there is always new stuff (to us) to see. I would do your last night in Reykjavik just so you are not too far for your flight the next day. With 3 nights elsewhere, you can get a taste of Iceland. I would stay a night on Snaefellsness, a night in the Golden Circle and a night around Vik, and then of course Reykjavik.

For hotels in Reykjavik, these are ones we have stayed, some multiple times, but we have had great stays at each. All of these are within easy walking distance of restaurants and shops, so no need to drive around town.

Center Hotel Plaza
The Centrum
Hotel Fron (has parking)
Center Hotel Laugavegur. (free parking)
Center Hotel Midgardur (free parking)
4th Floor Hotel

I almost always use booking.com for Iceland and one reason is that many of the smaller places do not have their own website, so they use this platform. You may want to up your budget a bit as $250 in Iceland is fairly low. I just booked two hotels for our trip there this summer and paid right at $300.

I'm returning to the Center Hotel Laugevegur next week. I like the location, the quiet, and the comfort.

Plenty of restaurants within walking distance. I can't help with parking.

Thank you all SO, SO much! I hadn't even thought of using Booking.com as I always go through the hotel websites but I always wondered if there was a way to see where hotels were in relation to other things - duhhh - now I know how! Will look at all the great suggestions - just what I needed. And I'm really glad everyone thinks 4 nights isn't too much. I had only wanted to stay for 3 nights, figuring we'd do the circle, a Blue Lagoon or other hot springs and a day on the south coast with the city for dinner and in-between exploring. You've all been a great help!

OMG, no 4 nights is definitely not too much! We head back for our 8th trip this summer, and most of our trips have been for a couple of weeks at a time.

mikliz97 - Wow! If you were going for 4 nights on your first trip, what would you prioritize seeing and doing? We like to be outdoors.

Peggy--With just 4 nights, I would really push it since you won't be dealing with jet lag. If you don't mind pushing it, I would head to Vik for the first night and the next day wander up to Jokulsarlon, and then stay in Vik again that night. Then a night in Borgarnes with driving through the Golden Circle. Then do Snaefellsness that next day and head back down towards Reykjavik. Depending on your flight, if it is an afternoon or evening flight, you could stay another night around Borgarnes and then see Reykjavik before you fly home. If you want to take it a bit easier, then skip Jokulsarlon. Head to Vik for a night, the GC for a night, Snaefellsness (around Stikkisholmur) for a night, and the last night in/around Reykjavik. If you like lagoons, do not miss Hvammsvik on the way to/from Snaefellsness. It is about 45 minutes north of Reykjavik and is our favorite commercial lagoon in all of our trips.
