Google Voice app experience?

My cell company wants $100 for me to be able to receive/make calls while we are in Iceland. The rental car I will have in Iceland comes with a free wifi hotspot, so I downloaded Google Voice as it seemed to be a reasonable way to make and receive calls during holiday. When in Iceland, calls are 1 cent a minute. I doubt I will make even one call but leaving the kiddos to mind the farm, you never know...

So far, I have been able to make and receive "practice" calls fine, as well as send and receive texts. I like the fact that it will send an email to my Gmail account in case I have missed a call/text.

Anyone else tried this in Iceland and will it work on the wifi networks you log into over there? T-minus 2 weeks and counting!

Is $100 a monthly charge? Verizon also has a daily plan that is $10/day. I haven't used Google Voice in Iceland (haven't been there yet), but have used GV in 6 countries and it's worked good. I have to call my geezer hubby on our land line since he won't answer his cell phone and it works for that unlike WhatsApp. You have to been on WiFi but if you can work around that and stay in Airplane mode, you can save money on daily charges.

Thank you! GV is looking a good ideal then. Yes- $100/month or $10/day from US Cellular, but we will be traveling for 11 days... And we will be hooked into free Icelandic WIFI pretty much the entire time.

So can I use google maps on my Iphone 15 to get verbal driving directions in English to guest houses? Or is the Icelandic written language way too complicated to even try to use it?
And What's App works cellphone to cellphone, right?
