Gas station credit card pin vs tap

What are the most recent experiences on self service gas station payment with credit cards, with chip-pin, or with contactless/tap?
Just want to get some ideas as to if pin is still needed for credit cards.

Usually you can just tap but unmanned stations often want pins. You can always go inside a manned station to pay as well. Definitely have your card on you and not just Apple Pay. That with most of the time but a few months ago we ran into a couple that only had it in their phone, no physical card, and they were stuck.

I was just in Iceland, 8/4-8/11, and I did not need a pin at any of our gas stops. Some machines were tap and some were just an insert into a card reader. I had a pin set up because I heard I might need one but I never used it. We traveled from KEF to Reykjavik, all over the south coast and out to the Snaefellsnes peninsula and back with no issues.

When I've visited, I've always just used my debit card since my credit card doesn't have a PIN (yes, I contacted them and asked and they said they don't issue them). One thing I've heard of people doing is to buy a gas card inside a station and then you can use that at unmanned stations instead and won't need the PIN. I haven't done it, though.

We have bought these prepaid gas cards, but found they work off and on. Granted, we go all over and not just the south coast etc. Iceland is just different than most places. Things can be really hit or miss.
