Ferry to Heimaey - leaving rental car?

Hi Folks. We're headed to Iceland for first time in mid-September heading to the South coast. We have an overnight Airbnb on Heiimaey Island. My question is whether we should (and can?) leave our rental car in Landeyjahöfn when catching the ferry. Can we walk from the ferry with luggage to town where our Airbnb is? Walk to sights and museum? Seems it would save us from money if a car is not needed. Thanks for any advice on the question.

You can, but I wouldn't. We just got back from there and I debated the same thing. We were so happy that we kept the car! One reason is that on the return trip, if the weather is bad they may not pull back into Landeyjahofn, but rather a port 3 hours away. If that happens you have no way to get to your vehicle. The other reason is that it really is nice to have a vehicle on the island. The downtown area is right by the harbor, but there is much to see on the middle to south end of the island which is too far to walk really.

I would also agree that you will want a car on the island. The island is not large but you won't want to hike all over it. A car is going to make your time there much more rewarding as you won't feel stuck in town (the town is lovely, but getting out to the cliffs/beaches/hikes in other parts of the island would be much, much harder without a car).

Thanks for the information. We were doing a similar trip to the island and planning to leave the vehicle at ferry area on the mainland. I see your point about weather issues. So my question would be - is parking an issue on the island? We do have a reservation to stay overnight too. Thanks.

Parking is super easy on the island! Our guesthouse only had I think 3 spots on their property, but street parking was available everywhere. We had no issues at all.
