The best route to go from Husavik to Dettifoss falls: 1) Hwy 85 around the peninsula to hwy 862 down to the falls...or 2) Go back to Myvatn then up to the falls using 862 again? The first choice allows to see the Asbyrgi cliffs ( worth the detour?)...but not sure about the road condition. TIA. ( travelling in May 2025).
We took 85 up and around, but took 864 for the east side. I am not sure if that side will be open by then as the time we did this it was August. Going up 85 was nice though, regardless of which one you take. If you come from Myvatn IMO you are missing some great scenery.
Thanks. That is what we'll do then. RS suggests to take the 862 though, west side.
The west side is paved but the east side is not so is a rougher road. The plus is far fewer people plus another waterfall just before Dettifoss that you can stop at. FWIW I think RS missed the mark on a lot of stuff for this country.
Thank youi. How so?? I am planning my whole trip based on this book. Am I missing something? I plan to look at the different touristic websites too.
This is the RS site, so I don't want to be too open about my thoughts since his book is good in some aspects. For me, the two best resources for planning any trips to Iceland are the Lonely Planet Ring Road book (even if you are not doing a ring road trip) and then Iceland With A View. IWAV has a website as well as You Tube channel and her information is spot on. She actually collaborated with LP a year or so ago and came out with a new book together, and that one is pretty good. I started using both of these on our 2nd trip, and even with our 8th trip this summer, I still refer back to both of these.
Ok, thank you...good to know! I have reserved half of my trip already using RS book...I'm now at the Southeast part of Iceland. But will check other references as well. Thanks a lot.
