Does anyone have experience driving from Myvatn to Dettifoss Waterfall on the east side? We'll be in a 2WD auto, and I want to be sure it's doable to go that route - apparently a better view and less spray. The RS guide is from 2020 and I'm seeing more recent posts that make it look like a better road than it was then. Insight greatly appreciated!

We did the east side on our 2021 trip. I would not attempt that road in a 2WD! We had a Land Cruiser and still had to go very slow and be extremely careful. If you do this, go at a snails pace. We did not go from Myvatn, but rather came down from the north and then continued on to Myvatn. The east side is a gravel road, and there are a lot of sharp rocks/lava that can easily puncture a tire.

We did the west side and it was amazing! We didn't experience any spray; maybe it depends on what overlook people go to.
