Dettifoss and Selfos from road 862

Hi,
I have a drive in July, from Mývatn to Akureyri via Gljúfrastofa, Húsavík, Goðafoss.
I really want to visit Dettifoss and Selfos before Gljúfrastofa, but something looks very strange.
If I skip Dettifoss and Selfos it takes me via road 862. If I go to Dettifoss and Selfos it takes me via road 864 which is parallel to 862.

It adds only 25km but adds a one hour drive.
What is the issue with this 864 road?

Is there a good option to see Dettifoss and Selfos from road 862?

BTW, I have a 4WD car.

I responded to your post on TripAdvisor, and you got some good info from a local there.

We did 864, the east side, which is a very rough road. We had a Land Cruiser on that trip and were very happy to have that with its higher clearance on this road. Road 862 is paved, so no worries on that.
