Hi we have planned a three days trip to Iceland ( excluding days of late arrival and early departure sometime in October. We won't drive and planning to take day trips from Reykjavic. Options are one day Golden Circle, one day south coast and one day local site seeing in Reykjavic + Northern Lights trip at night.
Does it look too hectic? Or we should let go of Golden Circle and take a two day trip to South coast, exploring it leisurely?
I would skip the golden circle and opt for a 2 day south coast trip. There is so much more to see in this area. A northern light trip would be nice if you have time. Aurora Experts is who we have used and will be using again in a few weeks.
I would do both because that is what I did. Had no idea when I would be back and wanted to see as much as possible in my 2.5 day. Your time there is short, you don't have to drive, why not see those other sites? Plenty of tours that will take you to there, use them.
Thanks. Will work it out and get back if required.
Btw, which is the best southcoast day trip, (if we go for one) including Zokularson / Diamond beach and bit of glacier ride? Troll has one including Katla cave, a bit costly though. Anyone availed it?
We have done that one with Trill and it is good.
Thanks.
One question here. We are 60+, generally fit and travel extensively but not used to long hike or stiff climb. How long is the glacier hike to see the blue ice cave in Skaftafell /elsewhere. I have seen two hours somewhere - is it one way or to and from the cave?
Some tours offer a super zeep ride.. does it mean right upto the cave without glacier hike or for a small section?
We are preparing for the trip.. bookings mostly done. Most of the information required are already available in this forum which is a great help. Our first day will be south coast trip, second at Reykjavik + Northern lights and last day for Golden Circle.( not yet booked). Just wondering whether we should go for Snaefellsnes day trip on the last day on the last day. Your thoughts?
Another point though we have taken the risk knowingly.. we shall arrive on 21st and take morning flight to UK on 25th..Our Schenzen visa expires on 25th itself. They have issued exactly as per our itenarary only.
Any thoughts on this.. any suggestion? In the worst case, if we are stuck / flight cancelled due to weather condition, how to handle the situation?
Sorry I missed your post about a glacier hike. The one we did was at Solheimajokull and it was 3 hours. It took a while to get the crampons on for everyone and then walk up to where you really start walking up it. It is not difficult though. I am mid 50's and just had 2 knee replacements this winter, and I did it 2 years ago when my knees were shot, to give you an idea.
I would absolutely do a Snaefellsness day trip since you have time.
As or the Visa, I haven no idea how that would be handled, sorry.
Thanks Snohomish for the response, especially on the hike part. On Snaefellsnes,my query was whether we should go there in stead of Golden Circle as we have only one day at our disposal. May be you have meant the same, just reconfirming.
Hi, yes, I would do Snaefellsness over the Golden Circle. There is just so much more to see and far fewer people, so a win win;)
Regarding the visa it can be extended in the case of force majeure, as long as you have not exceeded 90 days in Schengen- see here- https://island.is/en/apply-for-visa-extension
But that will not be an instant thing, say if you were just delayed by one night.
The best you could hope for is compassionate immigration- after all they would know about an airport shutdown the previous day, but that is not a given. Not an ideal situation to be in. You have obviously applied for a single use visa when a multi entry visa may have been the best solution.
If you have reached 90 days then you are in trouble, force majeure or otherwise.
But really no one here is qualified to give binding legal advice.
Thanks both again. Because of the visa issue, I think we shall finish off the long day trips on first two days and take it easy in Reykjavik on the 3rd day to avoid getting stuck outside Reykjavic
We just gave our travel plan from Mumbai while applying ( three nights in Sweden and four nights in Iceland) and accordingly, they issued single entry visa..we did apply for multiple only. Anyway, our stay in Schenzen area will be 8 days only. We shall explore the link given by you and do further research before flying. Thanks again.
That itinerary makes the most sense. I always suggest staying near Reykjavik the last night at least anyway just due to weather in case roads are closed etc.
