Most everything I read recommends getting full insurance when renting a vehicle. Is there anyone out there that hasn't gotten full insurance and had no issues with vehicle damage. The way people talk about this topic they make it sound like you are 100 percent going to have damage to the vehicle. If that is the case, I suspect all these vehicles have paint chipped off and dents galore when you pick them up? Any advice beyond get full coverage is appreciated.
We always get the full insurance in Iceland. The last car we rented there I. September for have Deby’s and scratches. The time we had a camper, we also had full insurance. As we were driving out of the parking lot there we saw several campervsns sitting there wrecked to no end. It would be a real wake up call to someone that doesnt know what Iceland can throw at you.
All that said, what advice are you looking for?

Probably several, I guess that most people return the vehicle without damage. But, the weather in Iceland can be very unpredictable and severe and can cause major damage. So in the end it boils down to how lucky you feel.
Thanks to those that have replied. I understand that the weather can be unpredictable. I"m actually more worried about other drivers than the weather. Related to the weather damage, the insurance they want you to get doesn't cover any wind damage to doors nor does it cover damage to the undercarriage which in my opinion would be the two areas they should be covering.
Fear is one method companies use to motivate people to purchase things and the insurance field is no different. I don't necessarily have an issue purchasing insurance I am just trying to figure out what percentage of individuals actually benefited from having.
How many people that rented a vehicle in Iceland had a chipped or cracked windshield upon returning it or better yet had an object of some sort hit their vehicle which could have caused damage?
How many people had issued with sand and wind on the south coast that caused damage?
Thanks again for all the responses.
We have never had an issue, but are extremely careful and luck has a lot to do with it as well. I have read numerous reports of cracked windshields, and dents in doors from other people not holding onto their doors and the door flying and hitting another car. Last fall a large van came within about 3" of backing into me. They finally stopped after I laid on the horn like crazy and people in the parking lot were waving at the idiot trying to get their attention to stop. So yes, definitely be cautious of others.
As for damage for car doors being damaged due to wind blowing them back, and the undercarriage, that is pretty standard for those to not be included.
I have no idea what percentage of people have issues, and I doubt you would even be able to google that information. Trust me though, we have rented vehicles there numerous times and you want full coverage.
The sand and ash storms along the south are real. Just look up news reports and you will see car windows blown out and filled with sand/ash, or pools filled with it, etc.
One thing we do is bring string or ribbon and tie it to a side mirror. That way when we park we can see which way the wind is blowing and make sure to park into the wind. This lessons the likelihood of a car door flinging back. Also make sure anytime you get out that you have two hands on the door. You don't realize how quickly that can happen.
One July, it got very windy in the early afternoon and we had a camper van. We had to find a campground asap to park and hunker down. The winds were that strong, even in the summer, and it was not safe to keep driving. Cars and campers do get blown off the road. The roads are two lane and NO shoulders. The roads are built up, so once you go over that outside line, you will be rolling down an embankment. So if the wind blows the car, well, you are out of luck.
