We are a group of four who are planning to go from Reykjavik to Akureyri for a few days. I am uncertain if we need a 4 wheel drive vehicle or not. I have been watching the Iceland road maps and our route has turned "green." Weather is tricky so we had rather be on the safe side if we need an all wheel drive vehicle.
Any suggestions for appropriate cars for 4 adults and their 5 bags and for rental services are appreciated.
Thanks, Cynthia
We were on a self-drive tour and the car rental company was Atak. They provided great service. We've also used Auto Europe for car rentals in Europe. We went in September and didn't go as far north as Akureyi, so icy roads were not a concern, but had a 4 wheel drive anyway. We had 3 adults in a Hyundai Tuscon, all with 1 carry-on sized bag and a backpack and had room for one more, though it would be tight. If your 5 bags are larger than carry-on, or to spread out a bit, then you would need something larger.
VA--thanks. We opted for a 4 wheel drive Land Rover Sport--hoping we actually get what we requested. It is purported to be roomy. Keeping our fingers crossed re: weather and road conditions.
Iceland Monitor out of Reykjavík Has a lot of good stories and updates to keep you informed.
Good luck! Here’s hoping Icelandic unpaved roads are nothing like the roads in northern Vermont in March!
Thanks Explorer. Cool website.
