Bus from Reykjavik to Landeyjahofn

Has anyone taken the bus system from Reykjavik to Landeyjahofn? I’m planning on taking the ferry to the Westman Islands for a couple of days (via ferry) and was hoping to use public transportation. I’m having trouble navigating the Straeto website and not certain there is bus service on Saturdays and Mondays. Any help would be appreciated 😊

The public buses are not meant for visitors really since they are limited in their routes and the days. I would encourage you to email the ferry company as they are incredibly helpful with this kind of stuff.

Not knowing when you trip is, I will give this general warning. The first full weekend in August is the largest music festival in Iceland. The population of Heimaey is 4k, but on that weekend 22K more people show up for it, so it is a madhouse! The ferry is packed to the gills. We left the day the festival was starting and sitting in the ferry line waiting to board was the best people watching you could imagine, lol.

There is an option with GetYourGuide for $70, but the calendar shows only through Aug 23rd. Driving is really best if you can.

gsodell15, I just checked the ferry's official website, and they have the ferry schedule listed there with the times that work for the ferry schedule, so I would go there and check it out: https://herjolfur.is/straetoaaetlun

You will see that bus 51 goes from Reykjavík to Selfoss and you then transfer to bus 53, which goes from Selfoss to Landeyjahöfn. As Mikliz pointed out, the bus schedule is definitely for locals, but there is one that leaves Reykjavik at 7:55 am during the week and at 7:45 am on the weekend. Returns should be convenient for you as well, as buses leave the terminal to head back to Reykjavik at around 10:25 am or 8:40 pm.

The ferry company does recommend checking the bus timetables on the Straeto website, as schedules can change, but they give you a direct link to those two specific bus lines, so that should be helpful for you. Hopefully you'll be able to figure it out from here. Here's a link to the Straeto timetable for the ferry terminal: https://www.straeto.is/skipuleggja-ferd/timatoflur/landsbyggdin

Thank you everyone for all the great advice. Just an FYI if anyone else is planning this trip: the bus with transfer from Reykjavik to the Landeyjahofn Ferry Terminal is an approximate 3 hour trip. I have reached out to the Straeto bus service and they warned me that sometimes the ferries get delayed or canceled. My final decision? We opted to rent a car.

That was a smart decision, IMO. I have heard of the ferries being cancelled as well as being detoured to another port. That port is 3 hours away so if you don’t have a vehicle you have no way back.
