Blue Lagoon on Reykjavík free day or before flight home?

Initially, I planned on doing the Blue Lagoon on the day that I drive from Vik back to Reykjavík (11 am or 12 pm entry time) and then we'd spend the remainder of the day exploring Reykjavík with an overnight there. But I've read that many people did the Blue Lagoon on their last day in Iceland, before their flight home.

So now I'm torn, should we do the Blue Lagoon on our Vik -> Reykjavík day as originally planned, or skip it that day - instead allowing the entire day for exploring the city and save it for our final day in Iceland before our flight home? Our flight departs at 4:45 pm.

I did it on the day of my flight home. I used a company that picks you up, holds onto your luggage while you're at the Blue Lagoon, and then picks you up from there and takes you to the airport. (I don't remember which company it was, but anyway, it sounds like you have a car, so that will be easy for you.)

I can't say for sure that a few hours at the Blue Lagoon made the transatlantic flight more relaxing and pleasant. But it didn't hurt.

We have done the Blue Lagoon on two of our trips. I much prefer it on the day that we leave. It was really nice to do it before heading to the airport and dealing with that chaos;) If you do it this way, you have the entire day to explore Reykjavik and there really is a lot to see and do there, so I wouldn't short change that.

Save it for the day you leave. It's very close to the airport so no backtracking. That's what we did and it worked out great. My daughter and I did not get our hair wet (which they don't recommend doing anyway for the ladies due to the water composition) so we didn't have to fool with drying our hair before a long flight.
